Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The singer-songwriter posted the story on X on Thursday (June 12), the day after the news was shared that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/brian-wilson-dies-beach-boys-age-cause-tributes-3869089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beach Boys\u2019 creative visionary Brian Wilson had died at the age of 82<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Badly Drawn Boy wrote: \u201cMark E. Smith got in my car thinking I was a taxi in 1997, I was playing a cassette version of \u2018Pet Sounds\u2019. Mark asked what it was and could he have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mark E Smith got in my car thinking I was a taxi in 1997, I was playing a cassette version of Pet Sounds. Mark asked what it was and could he have it ? I said he could keep it if we could do a collaboration. We recorded a song \u2018Calendar\u2019 a few weeks later. Thanks Brian Wilson!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two musicians wrote \u2018Calendar\u2019 together and the track was released as a B-side to The Fall\u2019s 1998 single \u2018Masquerade\u2019, from the album \u2018Levitate\u2019. Listen to the track here:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up post, Badly Drawn Boy responded to someone questioning whether Smith had really never listened to \u2018Pet Sounds\u2019 before, The Beach Boys\u2019 landmark 1966 album that is regularly named as one of the greatest records ever made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he replied. \u201cHe was indeed very merry. I was shocked and laughed that he didn\u2019t seem to recognise the Beach Boys..he literally said, \u2018What\u2019s this, I like it can I have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yes .. he was indeed very merry. It was later confirmed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/mark-e-smith-cause-of-death-2240666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he had been battling terminal lung and kidney cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As for Wilson, countless names from the music world have been paying tribute to him over the past 24 hours, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/paul-mccartney-pays-tribute-to-brian-wilson-i-loved-him-3869283\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul McCartney, who has consistently reserved the highest praise for his songwriting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time. I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow we will continue without Brian Wilson, \u2018God Only Knows\u2019. Thank you, Brian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/elton-john\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elton John<\/a>\u00a0shared a post that read: \u201cBrian Wilson was always so kind to me from the day I met him\u2026 I grew to love him as a person, and for me, he was the biggest influence on my songwriting ever; he was a musical genius and revolutionary. He changed the goalposts when it came to writing songs and shaped music forever. A true giant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/bob-dylan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob Dylan<\/a>, shared a tribute too, writing: \u201cHeard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I\u2019ve been listening to him and admiring his genius.
