A convicted abuser punched his partner on the head in Edinburgh and made a “grossly offensive” phone call mocking a woman’s disability.<\/p>\n

Matthew Galloway, 25, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week having been convicted of assault and a communications offence earlier this year.<\/p>\n

On April 7, 2025, Galloway assaulted his partner at the time by punching her on the head on the city’s Queen Charlotte Street. Having initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, he was detained in custody.<\/p>\n

On May 6, Galloway, whose address was listed as Whitburn, changed his plea to guilty and had a not guilty plea of threatening or abusive behaviour accepted by the Crown Office.<\/p>\n

However, over a month later at an address in Whitburn, West Lothian, court papers showed Galloway made a telephone call to a woman with the same surname as his ex-partner which was “grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.”<\/p>\n

Galloway shouted and swore at the woman using ableist language which was aggravated by prejudice relating to a disability.<\/p>\n

Papers also confirmed Galloway approached and repeatedly contacted his former partner having been granted bail after changing his plea to guilty.<\/p>\n

On May 30 Galloway pleaded guilty to breaching bail conditions and committing a communications offence.<\/p>\n

On June 5 he appeared in the dock for sentencing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court but the case was deferred until July 21 for criminal justice and social work reports to be obtained.<\/p>\n
