Eisenhower created the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/nasa\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Aeronautics and Space Administration<\/a> (NASA) in 1958 in response to Soviet space advancement. <\/p>\n<p>The Soviet Union was eager to have its cosmonaut in space first.<\/p>\n<p>Their choice for the extraterrestrial job was a young, 5\u20192\u201d tall Russian military pilot and industrial technician.<\/p>\n<p>He would become a star after the launch of the Vostok space capsule on April 12, 1961. <\/p>\n<p>Gagarin\u2019s physique was perfect for the risky mission \u2013 the cosmonaut flying the Vostok could not weigh more than 159lb and be no taller than 5\u20197\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The launch itself was at a knife\u2019s edge when the first test flight of Vostok-K rocket failed.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_199315701-8230.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22873974\" alt=\"Mandatory Credit: Photo by Sovfoto\/Universal Images Group\/REX\/Shutterstock (3829076a) Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin during last minute checks of vostok i control systems before launch, 1961. VARIOUS\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tJust moments before the launch (Picture: Sovfoto\/Universal Images Group\/REX\/Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>Its capsule never reached orbit and landed back on Earth with two dogs on board, who survived, but if it had not, it may have delayed Gagarin\u2019s later flight.<\/p>\n<p>The US responded by launching a chimpanzee named Ham into space, who was the first great ape in space (it survived the landing).<\/p>\n<p>Gagarin\u2019s capsule is basic by modern standards. Tiny, too \u2013 measuring just 7.5\u2032 by 7.8\u2032, roughly the size of a car.<\/p>\n<p>He orbited the Earth once during a 108-minute flight before being ejected from Vostok through a hatch. <\/p>\n<p>Luckily, Gagarin\u2019s parachute opened and he landed around 590 miles southeast of Moscow in Engels, Saratov region. <\/p>\n<p>Without Vostok, the rocket technology used now to transport astronauts to <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/09\/like-live-international-space-station-21391400\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the International Space Station (ISS) <\/a>might not exist.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_199315702-4058.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22873972\" alt=\"Mandatory Credit: Photo by REX\/Shutterstock (216661bs) YURI GAGARIN - LANDING APPARATUS OF VOSTOK,- SARATOV REGION, RUSSIA - APR 1961 HISTORY OF THE RUSSIAN SPACE PROGRAMME\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tVostok\u2019s landing apparatus that took Gagarin safely back (Picture: REX\/Shutterstock)<br \/>\nWhat technology came from space exploration? <\/p>\n<p>But the Soviet\u2019s space victory was short-lived \u2013 American astronaut Alan Shepard entered space on the Freedom 7 spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>Both countries continued to send more humans into space in the years that followed, sometimes with fatal consequences but also victories like the first woman in space and first landing on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>The space race is thought to have ended when Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon on July 20, 1969 from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/video\/apollo-18--trailer-1259928\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/video\/apollo-18--trailer-1259928\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apollo spacecraft<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>But the fierce development of space technology continued. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_246776276-4a09.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22873969\" alt=\"epa12018031 People walk past a digital billboard with an image of the world's first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and the slogan 'Let's go!' on the eve of 'Cosmonautics Day' celebrations in St. Petersburg, Russia, 08 April 2025. this summer to explore how biological materials could be used in space after concern over atmospheric aerosols from traditional satellites harming Earth\u2019s ozone layer, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/07\/asia\/japan-wooden-satellite-scn-spc\/index.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/07\/asia\/japan-wooden-satellite-scn-spc\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Koji Murata, a researcher at Kyoto University in Japan, told the outlet: \u2018At the end of their life, satellites re-enter the atmosphere. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The difference is, the wood in the LingoSat will burn up and eventually become a gas, whereas metals become fine particles instead.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Medical <\/p>\n<p>Healthcare relies on technology that originates from space missions, including artificial heart pumps, image processing in CAT scans and radiography. <\/p>\n<p>Radiography was initially developed for deep space imaging and photography of the moon. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists in NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory then utilised the technology to create the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/09\/23\/mri-scans-reveal-new-clues-about-long-covid-symptoms-19546659\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MRI scan used in life-saving medicine across the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" gate-keep its innovations as it is required by law to share its findings with the US government so that the tech can be used more widely.<\/p>\n<p>The launch of a spacecraft is a risky operation as the shuttle and the launch pad are subjected to extreme conditions. <\/p>\n<p>So NASA\u2019s lab created better shock absorbers that are now used in hundreds of buildings and bridges in earthquake-prone regions across the world. <\/p>\n<p>None of these structures \u2018have suffered even minor damage during an earthquake,\u2019 NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/shock-absorbers-buildings-bridges\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/shock-absorbers-buildings-bridges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shock-absorbent innovations helped to improve dynamic artificial limbs.<\/p>\n<p>Technology<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to take technology for granted, but most of our daily activities are powered by machines and ever-evolving applications. <\/p>\n<p>The Cold War space race from 1955 to 1977 was an exciting and nerve-wrecking time to be a scientist in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The US and Soviet Union competed who had the most space engineers. <\/p>\n<p>Sputnik\u2019s launch was feared to mark a \u2018technological Pearl Harbour\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/chmcore\/the-computing-race-to-space-9863e144670b\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/chmcore\/the-computing-race-to-space-9863e144670b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Computer History Museum<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"595\" height=\"426\" world\u2019s first portable computer emerged from space exploration \u2013 although it looked very different from the sleek and thin laptops we have today.<\/p>\n<p>Digital computers \u2013 first costing millions of dollars \u2013 became available to more scientists at the time of Sputnik by the mid-1950s.<\/p>\n<p>The first commercial computer was UNIVAC I used by the US Census Bureau in 1951.<\/p>\n<p>Apollo\u2019s programme that led to the Moon landing was supervised by computers through its planning, launch, navigation, the touchdown on Moon and return to Earth, Computer History Museum said.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s next for space exploration?<\/p>\n<p>Whether you hate it or love it, AI technology is here to stay. <\/p>\n<p>Any cutting-edge technology most likely has its origins in space exploration or is applied to it, including AI.<\/p>\n<p>AI allows a computer or a robot to mimic human intelligence, particularly handy with huge amounts of data. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<video
