{"id":180426,"date":"2025-06-13T06:45:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T06:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/180426\/"},"modified":"2025-06-13T06:45:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T06:45:10","slug":"rotten-stink-landfill-site-in-bury-set-to-expand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/180426\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Rotten stink&#8217; landfill site in Bury set to expand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Rochdale Borough Council has objected to the permit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Issues raised by them included concerns regarding &#8220;operator competence&#8221; at the site, issues with air quality and worries about odour checks and potential discharge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During the initial consultation there were 289 responses received from the public. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The EA said many objections included &#8220;concern over the impact from odour,&#8221; but in the draft report the EA said: &#8220;We are satisfied that there will not be a significant impact from odour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ldrs.org.uk\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Local Democracy Reporting Service, external<\/a> contacted Valencia Waste Management for a response.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In March 2024, Rochdale town hall leader Councillor Neil Emmott joined Bury Council leader Eamonn O&#8217;Brien and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham in calling for the operator to be stripped of its licence after smell complaints rocketed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The EA installed new monitoring facilities to track air quality around the site and later said there were no plans to remove Valencia&#8217;s licence after action on odour was taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The consultation on the expansion runs until 4 July.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rochdale Borough Council has objected to the permit.
