Kennedy made the announcement on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecKennedy\/status\/1932899858920120692\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cAll of these individuals are committed to evidence-based medicine, gold-standard science, and common sense,\u201d Kennedy said in his announcement. \u201cThey have each committed to demanding definitive safety and efficacy data before making any new vaccine recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Formally called the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the panel advises the CDC on how vaccines should be distributed. Those recommendations effectively determine the vaccines Americans can access. This week, Kennedy also removed the career officials typically tasked with vetting ACIP members and overseeing the advisory group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-purges-career-officials-vaccine-recommendations-process\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kennedy is a widely known vaccine skeptic who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jan\/29\/rfk-jr-confirmation-hearing\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">profited<\/a> from suing vaccine manufacturers, has taken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/may\/28\/pregnant-people-rfk-jr-covid-vaccines\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasingly dramatic<\/a> steps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/jessica-glenza?page=3\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upend<\/a> US vaccine policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cACIP is widely regarded as the international gold standard for vaccine decision-making,\u201d said Helen Chu, one of the fired advisers, at a press conference with Patty Murray, a Democratic US senator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe cannot replace it with a process driven by one person\u2019s beliefs. In the absence of an independent unbiased ACIP, we can no longer trust that safe and effective vaccines will be available to us and the people around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert W Malone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Arguably the most high profile new member, Robert W Malone catapulted to stardom during the Covid-19 pandemic, appearing across rightwing media to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/multimedia\/audio\/biden-teams-misguided-and-deadly-covid-19-vaccine-\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticize<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/11768985-after-the-biden-administration-admonished-florida-for-stagnant-vaccination-rates\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biden administration<\/a> while describing himself as the inventor of mRNA technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Messenger RNA technology powers the most widely used Covid-19 vaccines. While Malone was involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02483-w\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very early<\/a> experiments on the technology, researchers have said his role was limited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Malone\u2019s star rose quickly after appearing on the Joe Rogan <a href=\"https:\/\/nehls.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/nehls.house.gov\/files\/2022-01\/JRE-Rogan-Malone-Transcript.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast<\/a> in 2022, where he and Rogan were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2022\/jan\/31\/joe-rogan-covid-claims-what-does-the-science-actually-say\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized for spreading misinformation<\/a>. On the show, Malone promoted the idea that both ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine could be possible treatments for Covid-19, but said research on the drugs was being suppressed. <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2801828\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ivermectin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/dec\/18\/hydroxychloroquine-covid-treatment-journal-study-retracted\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydroxychloroquine<\/a> have not been shown to improve outcomes from Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cMalone has a well-documented history of promoting conspiracy theories,\u201d said Dr Jeffrey D Klausner, an epidemiologist and infectious disease expert at the University of Southern California, who recently told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/11\/us\/politics\/rfk-jr-cdc-vaccine-panel.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a> he was in touch with Kennedy about his appointments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Martin Kulldorff<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kulldorff is a former Harvard professor of biostatistics and an infectious disease epidemiologist originally from Sweden. He said in an essay for the rightwing publication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/harvard-tramples-the-truth\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Journal<\/a> that he was fired because he refused to be vaccinated in line with the school policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Like Malone, he rose to prominence during the pandemic as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/26\/rfk-jr-chronic-disease-covid\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Covid contrarian<\/a>\u201d who criticized the scientific consensus \u2013 views he said alienated him from his peers in the scientific community. He voiced his opposition to Covid-19 vaccine mandates and, in his essay, complained of being ignored by media and shadow-banned from Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kulldorff co-authored the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbdeclaration.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Barrington Declaration<\/a>, which called for limited closures instead of pandemic lockdowns before vaccines were available. The document became a touchstone for the American political right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Prior to the pandemic, Kulldorff studied vaccine safety and infectious disease, including co-authoring papers with members of CDC staff, such as on the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/?term=Vaccine+Safety+Datalink+Rapid+Cycle+Analysis+Team%5BCorporate+Author%5D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaccine Safety Datalink<\/a>. He was a member of the CDC\u2019s Covid Vaccine Safety Working Group in 2020, but said later he was fired because he disagreed with the agency\u2019s decision to pause Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s Covid-19 vaccine and with Covid -19 vaccine mandates. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/130460\/download\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">served<\/a> on the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) drug safety and risk management advisory committee around the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">He has since enjoyed support from people already within the administration, including Great Barrington Declaration co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36328937\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Jay Bhattacharya<\/a>, current head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rJcyxVKEF8g\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Vinay Prasad<\/a>, head of the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, which handles vaccines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cody Meissner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Meissner is a professor of pediatrics at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He previously held advisory roles at the FDA and CDC, including ACIP from 2008-2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In 2021, Meissner co-wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/masks-children-parenting-schools-mandates-covid-19-coronavirus-pandemic-biden-administration-cdc-11628432716\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an editorial<\/a> with Dr Marty Makary, now the head of the FDA, which criticized mask mandates for children. In April, he was listed as an external adviser to ACIP on the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Notably, Meissner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/acip\/disclosures\/by-member.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is listed<\/a> in a new conflicts of interest tool launched by the health department in March. Kennedy had criticized the fired ACIP members as \u201cplagued with persistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/kennedys-ouster-us-vaccine-advisers-puts-pharma-ties-under-scrutiny-2025-06-12\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conflicts of interest<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cHe\u2019s a card-carrying infectious disease person who knows the burden of these diseases, and he knows the risk and the benefit,\u201d Dr Kathryn Edwards told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-cdc-vaccine-advisory-panel-names\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a>. Edwards previously served as chair of the FDA\u2019s vaccine advisory panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vicky Pebsworth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Pebsworth is a nurse and the former consumer representative on the FDA\u2019s vaccine advisory committee. She is also the Pacific regional director for the National Association of Catholic Nurses, according to Kennedy\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144859\/download#page=182\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2020<\/a>, Pebsworth spoke at the public comment portion of an FDA advisory panel meeting on Covid-19 vaccines. There, she identified herself as the volunteer research director for the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), \u201cand the mother of a child injured by his 15-month well-baby shots in 1998\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The NVIC is widely viewed as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-vaccine-skeptics-truth\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-vaccine advocacy<\/a> organization \u201cwhose founder Barbara Lou Fisher must be considered a key figure of the anti-vaccine movement\u201d, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9940232\/#bibr12-00469580231155723\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article<\/a> from 2023 on how to counter anti-vaccine misinformation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Retsef Levi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Levi is a professor of operations management at the MIT Sloan School of Management who Kennedy described as an \u201cexpert in healthcare analytics, risk management and vaccine safety\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In 2021, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/154871\/download#page=180\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposed<\/a> Covid-19 booster shot approval during the public comment portion of an FDA advisory committee hearing. In 2022, he wrote an article calling for EMS calls to be incorporated into vaccine safety data, arguing that cardiovascular side effects could be undercounted \u2013 an article that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-022-10928-z\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later required correction<\/a>. The potential effects of Covid-19 vaccines on heart health have been a focal point of right-leaning criticism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Last month, Levi was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/2025\/05\/07\/a-doctors-flawed-science-puts-us-at-risk-editorial\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> for publishing a pre-print paper \u2013 a paper without peer review \u2013 that he co-authored with Dr Joseph Ladapo, the Florida surgeon general, a vaccine skeptic. The paper alleged that people who took the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine were more likely to die than those who received the Moderna vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael A Ross<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Kennedy described Ross as \u201ca Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University and Virginia Commonwealth University, with a career spanning clinical medicine, research, and public health policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">However, as first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-cdc-vaccine-advisory-panel-names\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a>, Ross\u2019s name does not appear in faculty directories for either school. A spokesperson for George Washington University told the outlet that Ross did work as a clinical professor, but \u201chas not held a faculty appointment \u2026 since 2017\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A spokesperson for Virginia Commonwealth University described Ross as \u201can affiliate faculty member\u201d at a regional hospital system in the Capitol region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">He is also listed as a partner at Havencrest Capital Management, as a board member of \u201cmultiple private healthcare companies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph R Hibbeln<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Hibbeln is a California-based psychiatrist who previously served as acting chief for the Section of Nutritional Neurosciences at the NIH. He describes himself as an expert on omega-3, a fatty acid found in seafood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">He also serves on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafoodnutrition.org\/profile\/joseph-hibbeln\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advisory council<\/a> of a non-profit that advocates for Americans to eat more seafood. He practices at Barton Health, a hospital system in Lake Tahoe, California.
