{"id":181405,"date":"2025-06-13T15:26:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T15:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/181405\/"},"modified":"2025-06-13T15:26:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T15:26:10","slug":"several-treated-for-suspected-botulism-in-county-durham-after-adverse-reactions-to-botox-jabs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/181405\/","title":{"rendered":"Several treated for suspected &#8216;botulism&#8217; in County Durham after &#8216;adverse reactions&#8217; to Botox jabs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>10 people have required treatment for adverse reactions to Botox jabs in County Durham<\/p>\n<p>15:05, 13 Jun 2025Updated 15:05, 13 Jun 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_Calls-for-kids-Botox-ban-grows.jpg\" alt=\"10 people have required treatment after adverse reactions to Botox jabs\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>10 people have required treatment after adverse reactions to Botox jabs(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Several people from County Durham are being treated for suspected botulism. 14 people have presented to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclelive.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> healthcare settings in the county following adverse reactions after receiving cosmetic procedures involving botulinum toxin (sometimes branded as Botox), 10 of whom have required treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Botulism is a rare condition that can be serious. Dr Joanne Darke, a UKHSA consultant, said that there are effective treatments available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Symptoms of botulism can include drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), slurred speech, and breathing difficulties. Dr Darke said: &#8220;If you have had a recent treatment and are having symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or drooping eyelids, contact NHS 111 or A&amp;E for further advice and seek treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Investigations are ongoing but the UKHSA says that evidence so far does not suggest that the product used has been contaminated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Symptoms have been reported a few weeks after injections.
