NCAA antitrust lawsuit, \u201cmany involved have pointed to the next big one coming down the pike\u201d &#8212; Johnson vs. NCAA, which \u201cgets into one of the thorniest issues in college sports: employment,\u201d according to Seth Emerson of THE ATHLETIC. Johnson v. NCAA, which has been moving through the courts for almost six years now, could be a \u201cclarifying win for the NCAA, or it could be the case that hastens the big changes many have predicted &#8212; football breaking away from the rest of college sports, and a football Super League.\u201d The case could go to trial \u201cas early as next year.\u201d Emerson notes there is \u201calways a chance the NCAA and the plaintiffs will settle,\u201d as in the House case, which \u201cleads to new rules and perhaps collective bargaining.\u201d But for now, \u201cboth sides seem dug in.\u201d Johnson filed his case before the NIL and revenue sharing eras began, but Paul McDonald, the lead lawyer for the plaintiff, argues that \u201cshould have no impact:\u201d All athletes should be \u201cdeemed employees because they are performing a job.\u201d The SEC and a group of education associations filed an amicus brief in the Johnson case, warning, \u201cIf colleges and universities are forced to pay their student-athletes (as employees) it is inevitable that many schools will simply eliminate athletics teams.\u201d Emerson added the NCAA has \u201cexpressed no interest in granting hourly wages to any athletes, even those in football and basketball, hoping the House settlement\u2019s revenue-sharing structure shows that athletes are now being sufficiently paid\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6416474\/2025\/06\/12\/johnson-vs-ncaa-case-college-sports-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6416474\/2025\/06\/12\/johnson-vs-ncaa-case-college-sports-employees\/\">THE ATHLETIC, 6\/12<\/a>). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Throughout the final stretch of the House v.
