The two-time champions failed to progress from the qualifying stages in the five tournaments after the one hosted by Georgia. The U19 Euros are played annually, but UEFA cancelled the 2020 and 2021 editions because of COVID-19.

On their return to the eight-team tournament, Hanno Balitsch’s side is seeded in the group of death. Fellow two-time winners England, Norway and the Netherlands are grouped alongside Germany, while holders Spain have Denmark, Montenegro and hosts Romania on their path.

Norway are one of the only three teams that kept their place from last year’s tournament in Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, Germany’s first opponent also make their maiden appearance since reaching the semi-final in the 2017 edition. Back then, the two teams also went head-to-head in the first game, with the Netherlands beating Germany 4-1.

In the opening game of this year’s tournament, record champions Spain beat Denmark courtesy of an own-goal by Oscar Gadeberg-Buur.
