It was not the dignified death that we would have wanted for her. It wasn&#8217;t the death she deserved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I think she got a black service, not an NHS service.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lord Adebowale, who for nearly 20 years was chief executive of Turning Point, a care organisation that supports people with substance misuse and mental health problems alongside those with learning disabilities, before becoming chair of the NHS Confederation in 2019, said there were multiple examples of inequalities in the health service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk\/news-item\/analysis-reveals-hugely-concerning-disparities-in-waiting-times-between-different-patient-groups-in-england#:~:text=They%20found%20that%3A,white%20patients%20the%20same%20age\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research, external<\/a> showing younger black people waited 20 minutes longer on average in A&amp;E than white people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It also showed people from the poorest backgrounds were more likely to face year-long waits for routine treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Other <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cancerresearchuk.org\/2023\/11\/23\/health-inequalities-early-cancer-diagnosis\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies, external<\/a> have suggested people from deprived communities are 50% more likely to have cancer diagnosed after a visit to A&amp;E \u2013 such diagnoses are more likely to be at a later stage when chances of survival are lower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said while the promise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c331xnrn3dzo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extra money for the health service made in this week&#8217;s spending review <\/a>was welcome, that alone would not tackle the inequalities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It a systematic problem \u2013 I don&#8217;t want to blame any particular individual or my mum&#8217;s local NHS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;What happened to her could happen anywhere.
