{"id":182487,"date":"2025-06-14T01:03:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T01:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/182487\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T01:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T01:03:11","slug":"believe-eyes-u-s-expansion-maintains-focus-on-emerging-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/182487\/","title":{"rendered":"Believe Eyes U.S. Expansion, Maintains Focus on Emerging Markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 2023, Believe CEO <strong>Denis Ladegaillerie<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/believe-targets-us-market-expansion-success-labels-emerging-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Billboard<\/a> he was eying the U.S. Two years later, the Paris-based company is ready to expand its artist and label services business to the world\u2019s largest music market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re building teams in 50 countries, and we\u2019re going to build more in other countries, starting with the U.S. this year,\u201d says <strong>Romain Vivien<\/strong>, global head of music\/president for Europe. In fact, Believe is currently hiring a Los Angeles-based vp of labels and artist solutions for the U.S. who can \u201cgrow, scale and motivate high output teams,\u201d according to the job posting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFounded in 2005 by Ladegaillerie, a former Vivendi executive, Believe has done brisk business by focusing on large European markets and developing markets globally. From 2020 to 2024, Believe\u2019s revenue rose 124% to 988.8 million euros ($1.05 billion) through organic growth and a mix of acquisitions and investments. Its portfolio includes German record labels Nuclear Blast and Groove Attack; French label PlayTwo; and Do\u011fan Music Company, Turkey\u2019s largest independent record label. In 2023, the company moved into publishing by <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.billboard.com%2Fpro%2Fbelieve-acquires-sentric-music-group-from-utopia%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cdan.rys%40billboard.com%7C667b3d52481642f6218108dda9e4e93d%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638853522804551388%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=UPBkpxECOIAXe5bjzpHc2yiwmF7s6UyJlr4eKLMzfDQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquiring<\/a> U.K.-based Sentric Music Group for $51 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe opportunity in the U.S. is immense \u2014 but the market is crowded. The U.S. accounted for 38% of global recorded music revenues in 2024, according to the IFPI. That\u2019s 2.8 times more than Believe\u2019s top two markets, France and Germany, combined. Competition in the artist and label services realm already exists from Universal Music Group-owned Virgin Music Group, Downtown Music Group (acquired by UMG but not yet approved by the European Commission), Sony Music\u2019s The Orchard, and AWAL and smaller independents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Americas accounted for only 15% of Believe\u2019s revenue in 2024, well behind Asia\/Oceania\/Africa\u2019s 24% and Europe\u2019s 61%, according to the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.believe.com\/sites\/believe\/files\/2025-03\/2025-03-13-Believe-FY%202024%20earnings-ENG.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earnings report<\/a>. Much of that Americas revenue came from U.S.-based digital distributor TuneCore, acquired by Believe in 2015, which had revenue of 64.6 million euros ($69.9 million) but was dwarfed by the 924 million euros ($1 billion) generated from Believe\u2019s \u201cpremium solutions\u201d business that spans record labels and services for artists, labels and songwriters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the current U.S. market is more amenable to an independent like Believe that has a digital-first mindset. Over the years, legacy gatekeepers such as TV, radio and brick-and-mortar retail \u2014 which are impediments or costly promotional vehicles for an indie artist \u2014 have waned in influence. The rise of TikTok, Spotify and YouTube presents \u201cmore opportunity to develop artists [there] digitally,\u201d Ladegaillerie told Billboard in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn focusing on mid-sized and developing markets, Believe foresaw a global music business where streaming and social media create vibrant local music scenes. As an independent, Believe didn\u2019t suffer from \u201cthe innovator\u2019s dilemma\u201d that might inhibit larger companies from pursuing small opportunities that could contribute significant revenue over time. Those mid-sized and developing markets produced music but organized themselves independently because major music companies were investing in larger markets in North America and Western Europe. When digital services like YouTube and Spotify took off, artists and labels needed digital distribution services and marketing expertise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s first and foremost about being here for the local community of artists in each local market,\u201d says Vivien, \u201chelping the rise of local artists to develop in their own country and then, of course, outside of their own market.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIndia, where Believe has operated for more than a decade, is the company\u2019s third-largest market after France and Germany, according to Vivien, while ranking No. 15 globally in 2024, according to the IFPI. Indian music is hyper-regional but takes advantage of global streaming platforms to reach Indian communities in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. A third of Believe\u2019s Punjabi streams come from outside of India, Vivien says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the U.S. market, Believe will find a growing number of artists who want help building a career while retaining ownership of their rights. Independent distributors accounted for 91.8% of the 99,000 tracks uploaded to streaming platforms daily in 2024, according to Luminate, and independents\u2019 recent share of current recorded music consumption has ranged from 15.6% in 2024 to 16.5% in 2022 by distribution. Within the major labels\u2019 share is an increasing number of licensing deals and joint ventures that give the artist greater ownership control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe exact terms of Believe\u2019s client deals vary, but the company takes a share of the revenue generated by artists\u2019 music. Vivien says the deals can vary from co-production deals to distribution-and-services deals. Believe can cover marketing, promotion, content creation, neighboring rights, synch, merchandising, branding and, in France, touring. Believe sometimes funds advances, too \u2014 as of Dec. 31, 2024, the company had 293 million euros ($305 million) of artist advances on its books.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe key, Vivien tells his team, is not to enter into a deal without \u201cperfectly understanding\u201d what the artist needs. \u201cSome of them [have] very strong management. Some of them can produce,\u201d he says. \u201cSome of them are well funded, so they don\u2019t need advances to produce their master. Some of them actually need funding. Some of them need marketing. Some of them are very local. Some of them need services outside of their market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLarger competitors have followed Believe\u2019s emphasis on label services and emerging markets. In the last year, UMG acquired the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/universal-music-group-acquire-indie-label-group-pias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remaining majority interest in [PIAS]<\/a> and, through its Virgin Music Group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/virgin-music-group-acquires-downtown-775-million-universal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purchased Downtown Music Group<\/a>. Sony Music <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/sony-music-acquires-kobalt-awal-neighbouring-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bought artist services provider AWAL<\/a> in 2021. Warner Music Group expanded its presence in India in 2024 through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/business\/business-news\/deezer-merlin-partner-artist-centric-royalties-music-deals-1235638054\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnership with Global Music Junction<\/a> and an investment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/nfl-unitedmasters-extend-music-licensing-pact-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">live entertainment and ticketing platform SkillBox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBelieve went public in 2021 and was <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.billboard.com%2Fbusiness%2Fbusiness-news%2Fbelieve-takeover-proposal-private-denis-ladegaillerie-consortium-shares-bid-1235605448%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cdan.rys%40billboard.com%7C667b3d52481642f6218108dda9e4e93d%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C638853522804591037%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=9i%2F68BaR8D962i0RztVLtO0Jmbxc5bvnOhjuXvx2G00%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taken private<\/a> in 2024 by a consortium led by Ladegaillerie and two investors, EQT and TCV. The consortium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/business\/business-news\/warner-music-plan-believe-dropped-1235651246\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survived an interested Warner Music Group<\/a>, leaving Believe outside the control of the three major music groups. Not only did the move allow Believe to retain its independence, it left the company well funded to pursue its mission.
