{"id":183090,"date":"2025-06-14T06:32:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T06:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183090\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T06:32:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T06:32:18","slug":"romania-flips-stance-endorses-nutri-score-labelling-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183090\/","title":{"rendered":"Romania flips stance, endorses Nutri-Score labelling system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>Romania has <a href=\"https:\/\/technical-regulation-information-system.ec.europa.eu\/en\/notification\/26971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notified<\/a> the EU of a government decision to endorse the use of Nutri-Score, marking a shift from its previously critical stance on the voluntary colour-coded nutrition label.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis labelling scheme, first launched in France in 2017, ranks food products from A (healthiest) to E (least healthy) based on their nutritional content, and aims to help consumers make more informed choices.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAlthough a 2020 European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/food.ec.europa.eu\/system\/files\/2020-05\/labelling-nutrition_fop-report-2020-207_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> indicated that a system like Nutri-Score could form the basis of an EU-wide model, its rollout has sparked debate.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRomania was previously among several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/member-states-coalition-presents-latest-challenge-to-colour-coded-nutrition-label\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">countries<\/a> \u2013 including Italy, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, and Latvia \u2013 that opposed the scheme, arguing it penalised certain traditional foods and overlooked national nutritional recommendations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEven in countries where it is already in use, such as France, Germany, Belgium, and Spain, Nutri-Score has sparked controversy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn March, the French government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/agriculture-food\/news\/nutri-score-needs-correction-says-french-agriculture-minister\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> for the first time that the label could have a negative impact on traditional food products.
