The parties in Brussels signed the understanding (Spanish Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares and British Foreign Minister David Lammy, together with Gibraltar Prime Minister Fabian Picardo, mediated by Trade Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d).<\/p>\n<p>No more land border controls<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">One of the main points of the political agreement concerns the free movement of persons and goods. The parties pledged to guarantee this for the land border and all inflows and outflows between Spain and Gibraltar. It is estimated that around 15,000 people cross the Spanish-British land border of Gibraltar daily, including thousands of cross-border workers who live in Spain but work across the border.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u201cWith this agreement, the barrier will disappear,\u201d Spanish minister Albares said. \u201cIt is the last wall on continental Europe\u201d to be\u00a0removed, he added. Gibraltar is and remains of the United Kingdom. However, for <strong>His Majesty\u2019s citizens not resident in Gibraltar<\/strong> arriving there,\u00a0the Schengen rules will apply: this means that <strong>they could be turned back by the Spanish border police, based at the port and airport of Gibraltar<\/strong>, if they have already spent 90 days in the Schengen area out of a period of 180 days. This\u00a0element may not sit well with the British Conservatives. The presence and authority of the Spanish crown in the Gibraltar port and airport could be seen as a reduction of British sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/P067178-387648-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-lazyloaded=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-429466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/P067178-387648-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"  data-\/><\/a>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares Bueno and\u00a0Maro\u0161 \u0160efcovic, 11\/06\/25<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, as far as goods are concerned, an agreement has been reached for the British territory at\u00a0the \u2018Pillars of Hercules\u2019 to apply an\u00a0indirect taxation system\u00a0in Gibraltar, also on tobacco, which will prevent\u00a0distortions and contribute to the prosperity of the whole region. This marks the\u00a0entry of the British territory into the Customs Union.
