The UK and EU have reached a agreement over the future of Gibraltar, solving what the government described as the \u2018last major unresolved issue from Brexit<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n People travelling between the tiny British territory \u2013 located on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula \u2013 and neighbouring Spain will not face checks under the deal.<\/p>\n It was called a \u2018historic agreement\u2019 by Gibraltarian chief minister Fabian Picardo, while British Foreign Secretary David Lammy<\/a> said a \u2018practical solution\u2019 had been secured.<\/p>\n The Foreign Office<\/a> has \u2018ensured Gibraltar\u2019s interests \u2013 as part of the UK family \u2013 are at the heart of this agreement\u2019, Lammy added.<\/p>\n Half the people who work in the territory, famous for its monumental rock and Barbary apes, cross the border between Spain and Gibraltar every day.<\/p>\n Picardo said, with the deal reached, it is now \u2018time to finalise the Treaty\u2019.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up to Metro’s politics newsletter, Alright Gov?\t\t\t<\/p>\n Craig Munro breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sign up here<\/a>.<\/p>\n The agreement agreed by the UK and EU following Brexit left the issue of the territory to be solved another day.<\/p>\n EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the deal, writing on X: \u2018It safeguards the integrity of Schengen and the Single Market, while ensuring stability, legal certainty and prosperity for the region.\u2019<\/p>\n Dame Priti Patel, the Conservative Shadow Foreign Secretary, said she would examine if the deal met the \u2018red lines\u2019 set out by the Tories when the previous government was in negotiations.<\/p>\n She said: \u2018Gibraltar is British, and given Labour\u2019s record of surrendering our territory and paying for the privilege, we will be reviewing carefully all the details of any agreement that is reached.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t The Foreign Office said passengers arriving at Gibraltar Airport will face border checks from both Gibraltarian and Spanish officials.<\/p>\n In a similar approach to French police operating at London St Pancras rail station, immigration and law and order will be tackled by Gibraltar while the integrity of the Schengen Area will be handled by Spain.<\/p>\n Lammy said: \u2018Alongside the Government of Gibraltar, we have a reached an agreement which protects British sovereignty, supports Gibraltar\u2019s economy and allows businesses to plan for the long-term once again.<\/p>\n \u2018I thank the Chief Minister and his Government for their tireless dedication throughout the negotiations. <\/p>\n \u2018The UK\u2019s commitment to Gibraltar remains as solid as the Rock itself.\u2019<\/p>\n Got a story?
