{"id":183891,"date":"2025-06-14T13:50:30","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T13:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183891\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T13:50:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T13:50:30","slug":"spain-and-uk-close-historic-deal-on-gibraltar-post-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183891\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain and UK close &#8216;historic deal&#8217; on Gibraltar post-Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spanish and UK authorities closed a &#8220;historic deal&#8221; on <strong>Gibraltar post-Brexit<\/strong> negotiations on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish foreign minister, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, announced the deal on social media and said that the agreement on the relationship between the UK colony and the EU &#8220;is now a reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Albares was accompanied by his <strong>UK counterpart<\/strong> David Lammy, the European Commissioner vice-president Maros Sefcovic, and the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was signed in Brussels and it is considered a &#8220;truly historic milestone&#8221; for Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160efcovic. The deal will benefit &#8220;everyone and <strong>reinforces a new chapter<\/strong> in the relationship between the EU and the UK,&#8221; the text shared on social media added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/6e2c1d7a-0ba5-4e99-a1a6-16757fc58dff.jpg\" alt=\"Spain's foreign affairs minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, European Commission vice-president Maro\u0161 \u0160efcovic, UK foreign minister David Lammy and Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo\"\/><br \/>\nSpain&#8217;s foreign affairs minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, European Commission vice-president Maro\u0161 \u0160efcovic, UK foreign minister David Lammy and Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo \/ Spain&#8217;s Foreign Affairs Ministry<\/p>\n<p>EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen also welcomed the conclusion of the talks as &#8220;it safeguards the integrity of Schengen and the Single Market, while ensuring stability, legal certainty, and prosperity for the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The future Agreement is without prejudice to the <strong>respective legal positions<\/strong> of Spain and the United Kingdom with regard to sovereignty and jurisdiction,&#8221; a joint statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>Pysical barriers<\/p>\n<p>The deal, which will benefit around 15,000 people daily, is planned to &#8220;secure the future prosperity of the whole region&#8221; and to do so, authorities have decided to remove all physical barriers, checks, and controls on persons and goods circulating between Spain and Gibraltar.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <strong>Schengen area<\/strong> will be preserved despite the barriers being removed.<\/p>\n<p>A statement says these movements will &#8220;bring confidence and legal certainty to the lives and well-being of the people of the whole region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After the deal, the different countries have agreed to establish dual <strong>Gibraltar and Schengen border checks<\/strong> at the airport and the port. These will be conducted &#8220;in full cooperation&#8221; between the EU and the UK or Gibraltar&#8217;s authorities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/da6b08b7-f86c-489f-ac28-e50f67e27878.jpg\" alt=\"The city, sea, and harbor in Gibraltar\"\/><br \/>\nThe city, sea, and harbor in Gibraltar<\/p>\n<p>Authorities announced that Spain will conduct Schengen checks, while the full Gibraltar checks will continue to be conducted as they are today.<\/p>\n<p>Checks on goods will be removed and an <strong>indirect taxation<\/strong> will be applied in Gibraltar, including on tobacco.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Spanish and UK authorities closed a &#8220;historic deal&#8221; on Gibraltar post-Brexit negotiations on Wednesday.
