{"id":183930,"date":"2025-06-14T14:10:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T14:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183930\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T14:10:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T14:10:13","slug":"she-is-the-player-who-is-almost-blind-in-one-eye-but-has-just-beaten-a-former-wimbledon-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183930\/","title":{"rendered":"She is the player who is \u2018almost blind\u2019 in one eye but has just beaten a former Wimbledon champion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>There are some truly special talents on the professional tennis circuit, many of whom have defied impossible odds to reach the apex of the sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Novak Djokovic stands out as arguably the most renowned example, emerging from war-torn Serbia and developing into one of the greatest tennis players of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it be a troubling upbringing or overcoming a serious ailment, those ranked on both the ATP and WTA tours deserve unlimited praise for simply being a level above the rest.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is one woman in particular who is accomplishing the seemingly impossible every day: competing at the highest level whilst being almost blind in her left eye.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Sramkova speaks about her vision troubles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What Rebecca Sramkova regularly achieves on the WTA tour is nothing short of miraculous, as she recently opened up on an eye condition that she has suffered with since birth.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking just last year, in a WTA <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/news\/4008649\/how-qualifier-rebecca-sramkova-has-overcome-impaired-eyesight-and-injuries\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> that branded her \u2018almost blind\u2019, she recalled: \u2018I don\u2019t know how it is to see good. I tried wearing contact lenses, but the vision was not that much different and I couldn\u2019t stand the feeling.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"696\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2219827230-1024x696.jpg\" alt=\"HSBC Championships - Day Four\" \/>Photo by Annabel Lee-Ellis\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>However, this was not the only issue Sramkova has dealt with across her time in tennis, recalling another setback which she overcame in 2017: \u2018I didn\u2019t play for almost one year because I had problems with my back.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I want to be someone. That\u2019s why we do this sport; to be someone. You see all the other girls around you fighting to be someone, and you want that, too. That\u2019s what keeps me pushing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>An unflinching mentality for an inspirational individual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How good has Rebecca Sramkova\u2019s career been?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Putting her career into context, Sramkova\u2019s career has already been a raging success.<\/p>\n<p>A professional athlete in a sport where concentration and eyesight are of paramount importance, the fact that she competes is enough to warrant widespread praise.<\/p>\n<p>However, she does not just make up the numbers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2182848798-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"2024 Jiangxi Open - Day 7\" \/>Photo by Li Bin\/VCG via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>This enigmatic Slovakian has enjoyed an impressive 12-year career thus far, reaching a career-high of 36th in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Currently sitting 41st, Sramkova is just outside the seeded spots for Grand Slam events, of which she has competed in five main draws.<\/p>\n<p>Boasting wins over notable names such as Katie Boulter, Sofia Kenin, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Mirra Andreeva, the 28-year-old even has a WTA title under her belt, having won a 250 event in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>And, just this month she felled the defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krej\u010d\u00edkov\u00e1 at <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen\u2019s<\/a> too, before <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/emma-raducanu-told-she-has-a-shot-which-is-one-of-the-best-on-the-entire-wta-tour-after-reaching-queens-quarterfinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emma Raducanu knocked Sramkova out<\/a> of the event.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>She has achieved what many will fail to do across an entire career, and still has plenty of good years left competing at the top.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What Sramkova continues to do should be celebrated.
