{"id":183967,"date":"2025-06-14T14:30:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T14:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183967\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T14:30:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T14:30:14","slug":"what-we-know-about-verizons-frontier-acquisition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/183967\/","title":{"rendered":"What we know about Verizon\u2019s Frontier acquisition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fifteen years ago, Verizon handed over its network of wired internet and phone lines to Frontier Communications in West Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, the company wants it back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Verizon\u2019s deal to acquire the original network and its expansion is approved by state regulators, it would make the telecommunications giant the largest internet and phone provider in the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since October, the West Virginia Public Service Commission had been waiting for details about how Verizon intended to address years of poor phone service and slow internet speed complaints from Frontier customers.<\/p>\n<p>Verizon officials have been negotiating more specific details with broadband and labor union representatives and submitted detailed plans to the PSC early Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They say they plan to improve upon Frontier\u2019s customer service, expand broadband and submit annual plans to regulators. They also pledged to invest in the state\u2019s workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the deal, why it\u2019s happening now, and what it could mean for Frontier customers and West Virginia\u2019s broadband expansion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is Verizon acquiring Frontier?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last September, Verizon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/news\/verizon-to-acquire-frontier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a $20 billion deal to acquire Frontier\u2019s operations nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Frontier currently serves over 150,000 homes and businesses in the state with fiber broadband, according to Verizon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=631266&amp;NotType=WebDocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application to PSC regulators.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acquisition of Frontier is a strategic fit,\u201d said Hans Vestberg, Verizon\u2019s CEO. \u201cIt will build on Verizon\u2019s two decades of leadership at the forefront of fiber\u2026 enhancing our ability to deliver premium offerings to millions more customers across a combined fiber network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal has already passed federal hurdles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the deal was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/society-equity\/verizon-ending-dei-programs-it-seeks-us-approval-frontier-deal-2025-05-16\/#:~:text=FCC%20approves%20Verizon%20deal%20to%20acquire%20Frontier%20after%20DEI%20changes,-By%20David%20Shepardson&amp;text=WASHINGTON%2C%20May%2016%20(Reuters),internet%20providers%20Frontier%20Communications%20(FYBR.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> by regulators at the Federal Communications Commission after Verizon committed to end its diversity, equity and inclusion programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/3CA_78_8048735_2263001473_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23190\"  \/>PSC Chairman Charlotte Lane speaks to lawmakers. Photo by Will Price\/WV Legislative Photography.<\/p>\n<p>However, because West Virginia regulates its own utilities and telecommunications providers, the deal requires approval from state regulators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy main concern about this whole transaction is the quality of service that our landline customers, who have no alternative, are going to see,\u201d said PSC Chairman Charlotte Lane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Frontier\u2019s history in West Virginia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frontier hasn\u2019t had the best track record in West Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company took over Verizon\u2019s telecommunications <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/HotTopics\/Topics2010\/Verizon_20100514.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lines in 2010<\/a>, and quickly became the state\u2019s largest and most complained-about provider.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, customers have filed thousands of complaints and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvgazettemail.com\/news\/frontier-customers-take-disputes-over-internet-speeds-to-arbitration\/article_6d73e555-2a04-5d11-bb1a-3b7774ef930e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even sued<\/a> the company over slow internet speeds and unreliable phone service.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_9001-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1982\"\/>Frontier\u2019s administration building in Charleston. Photo by Lucas Manfield<\/p>\n<p>Between 2010 and 2023, Frontier received over 13,000 informal complaints and over 500 formal complaints from customers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=639359&amp;NotType=WebDocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to PSC filings<\/a>. And in 2020, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSL3N2C30V9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed for bankruptcy<\/a>, citing billions of dollars of debt and infrastructure issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That same year, Frontier settled with state regulators and pledged to <a href=\"https:\/\/mountainstatespotlight.org\/2020\/12\/19\/frontiers-latest-compromise-with-w-va-regulators-200-million-but-lots-of-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invest $200 million<\/a> in West Virginia to upgrade its infrastructure and improve services over the next three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the company\u2019s commitments, complaints continued to flood in, reaching a peak of nearly 1,400 in 2022. Frontier\u2019s debt has surged to $12 billion, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=637094&amp;NotType=WebDocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed testimony<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is Verizon planning to address customer service issues?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Verizon has claimed customers should expect \u201cimproved service quality and reliability,\u201d and plans to build on Frontier\u2019s existing fiber infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the company\u2019s offerings will include bundle options for internet and phone service, and a new $20 per month broadband plan for low-income households in the state, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=631266&amp;NotType=WebDocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PSC filings<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/AP24249378859636.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27792\"  \/>Verizon is buying Frontier Communications in a $20 billion deal that helps bolster its fiber network. (AP Photo\/Matt Rourke, File)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0After negotiations with union representatives and state broadband officials, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.state.wv.us\/scripts\/WebDocket\/ViewDocument.cfm?CaseActivityID=643138&amp;NotType=WebDocket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced more specific<\/a> plans for customer service improvements and broadband expansion Friday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To address some customer service issues, Verizon committed to answer at least 80% of its service calls within 30 seconds and to hire 25 new technicians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Verizon also plans to complete an audit of Frontier\u2019s broadband infrastructure and connect at least 35,000 new addresses with high-speed internet.
