{"id":184002,"date":"2025-06-14T14:48:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T14:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/184002\/"},"modified":"2025-06-14T14:48:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T14:48:26","slug":"i-drove-a-car-with-a-speed-limiter-and-some-motorists-werent-pleased","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/184002\/","title":{"rendered":"I drove a car with a speed limiter and some motorists weren&#8217;t pleased"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speed limiters are fitted to all new cars in the UK due to EU rules<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_JAJ_TEM_300323BurtonJ_001JPG.jpg\" alt=\"Intelligent Speed Assistance technology could reduce crashes on our roads\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Intelligent Speed Assistance technology could reduce crashes on our roads(Image: Joseph Raynor\/ Nottingham Post)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Due to a shake-up of rules by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/european-union\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union (EU)<\/a>, all new cars sold in UK dealerships now have &#8216;mandatory&#8217; speed limiters or Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) devices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Some motorists think of it as an unwarranted interference with their <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/traffic-travel\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">driving experience and are not keen<\/a>, writes Jamie Brassington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Although ISA is capable of capping a car&#8217;s speed, it&#8217;s been noted that cars headed for the UK will be equipped with a &#8216;softer version&#8217;, which I reckon is a sensible approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">From my perspective, the introduction of some form of mandatory ISA can be advantageous, but not to the extent where it encroaches on a motorist&#8217;s liberty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Having personally tested a vehicle with a mandatory speed limiter on motorways, I can appreciate its intent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, during my test drive, a minority of drivers were less than pleased, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/lifestyle\/lifestyle-opinion\/tried-car-new-uk-compulsory-31853545\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"reports WalesOnlineLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reports WalesOnline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On a couple of occasions, frustrated drivers closed in on my tail as I maintained the legal speed limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The move to include Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) in vehicles bound for the UK has sparked a mixed response from motorists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Some drivers see it as a welcome safety feature, while others fear it could strip them of the power needed to &#8220;get out of nasty accidents&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With either a dashboard notification or added resistance to the accelerator pedal, it might encourage drivers to think twice about exceeding speed limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ultimately, speeding drivers are responsible for a high proportion of fatalities on our roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s also been argued that in peak traffic times, ISA could help reduce congestion by deterring motorists from speeding and following too closely.<\/p>\n<p>Intelligent Speed Assistance rules<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The EU has rolled out new ISA (Intelligent Speed Assistance) regulations under its General Safety Rule (GSR) &#8211; which stipulates the minimum safety standards required on vehicles and trailers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite the UK not adopting the EU&#8217;s GSR, manufacturers based in Europe aren&#8217;t removing ISA technology from UK-bound cars, meaning British drivers will be impacted by the changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Motor vehicles can be retrofitted with three types of ISA: informative\/advisory, supportive\/warning and intervening\/mandatory.
