Making sure that prisoners spend longer unlocked in purposeful activity must be a priority for the jail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">With Britain\u2019s overcrowded prisons hitting record levels last year, concerns over the safety of both staff and inmates have grown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) told BirminghamLive it was pushing ahead with improving prison conditions &#8220;to reduce the need for compensation claims and ensure taxpayer money is spent more effectively&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">FOI figures for HMP Birmingham compensation claims were first obtained by<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legalexpert.co.uk\/how-to-claim\/prison-compensation-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" Legal ExpertLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Legal Expert<\/a> and analysed by BirminghamLive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In 2021, the MoJ forked out \u00a310,000 in compensation for prisoner injury claims, of which \u00a33,000 related to prisoner-on-prisoner injuries, \u00a34,000 pertained to staff-on-prisoner injuries and the remaining \u00a33,000 was cited as for \u2018other personal injury claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The following year saw a drop, with the Ministry of Justice paying out \u00a35,500 in compensation, purely for prisoner-on-prisoner injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The year 2023, however, saw a significant jump, with more than \u00a330,000 paid out in compensation claims. And 2024 also saw the MoJ shell out big money, with more than \u00a318,000 paid out in total.<\/p>\n<p>HMP Birmingham compensation for prisoner injury claims:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">2021 &#8211; \u00a310,000<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">2022 &#8211; \u00a35,500<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">2023 &#8211; \u00a332,259.29<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">2024 &#8211; \u00a318, 694<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Total from 2021 to 2024 &#8211; \u00a366, 453.29<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The MoJ said: &#8220;Our jails are overcrowded, have been neglected for too long, and our hardworking staff are over-stretched. By addressing this crisis, we can begin the work of improving prison conditions to reduce the need for compensation claims and ensure taxpayer money is spent more effectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe Government is investing in prison maintenance and security, and prisoners who are violent towards staff or other prisoners will face the full consequences of their actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Legal Expert solicitor Lucy Parker said: \u201cPrisoners, like anyone else, have a right to their safety while incarcerated.
