rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a> voiced concerns about what it called a \u201cdeterioration of fundamental freedoms\u201d in the country.The EU cited \u201cgovernment interference\u201d in the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3302564\/why-choice-next-dalai-lama-such-sensitive-issue-beijing?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">succession plan for the Dalai Lama<\/a>, an ongoing crackdown in Hong Kong, and jailed Uygur and Tibetan activists as examples in its statement on the 40th edition of the EU-China Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The bloc accused China of \u201cpersistent restrictions on freedom of expression, religion or belief, peaceful assembly, and the right to equality and non-discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The bloc also called attention to what it said was an \u201cerosion of the rule of law, due process rights violations and the lack of judicial independence\u201d as well as the \u201cuse of forced labour and labour transfer programmes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Beijing rejected the accusations on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that
