A volunteer with northern sight loss charity Henshaws, Mary has helped organise countless trips and days out and it\u2019s something she says has been just as beneficial for her &#8211; giving her a \u2018purpose in life\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cVolunteering gave me a purpose in life, and it replaced my career,\u201d Mary said. \u201cThe people I help are my friends and family. I get so much pleasure from seeing what they get out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mary, who broke barriers as a female economist in the 1970s, decided to give volunteering a go in 2002 as part of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/nostalgia\/gallery\/brilliant-photos-show-how-commonwealth-24414790\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Commonwealth Games in Manchester<\/a> where she helped wheelchair users access the venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The decision to begin volunteering came after a turbulent few years for Mary. In 1998, she married her husband John, who she had first met at the age of 45 whilst on holiday in Egypt. 14 weeks after their marriage, John passed away from kidney cancer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_amr_men_040625_HS_03.jpg\" alt=\"Mary Gifford, 77, has been volunteering with Henshaws for more than 20 years now\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Mary Gifford, 77, has been volunteering with Henshaws for more than 20 years now(Image: Henshaws)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After John\u2019s tragic death, Mary had returned to work part time as a potter before being made redundant at the age of 53. She said of the time: \u201cI lost my 30-year career, my love of my life and husband and couldn\u2019t have been more at rock bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Whilst volunteering at the Commonwealth Games, Mary saw a leaflet for the Henshaws charity and decided to apply to become a volunteer. Now one of their most active volunteers, she\u2019s been with them ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAfter my husband died, I knew I wanted to volunteer but I thought I can\u2019t help people with cancer because it\u2019s too near the bone, but I wanted to work with people with disabilities,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_amr_men_040625_HS_07.jpg\" alt=\"The group visits give blind and visually impaired people a chance to explore museums and art galleries\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The group visits give blind and visually impaired people a chance to explore museums and art galleries(Image: Henshaws)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Having had some of her own work featured in exhibitions at venues like the Gallery <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/Oldham\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a> in the past, Mary was asked by staff at Henshaws whether she would like to help take visually impaired people to museums and galleries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI thought I can do that,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI love classical music, I go to the theatre, love art, go to the Hall\u00e9 and used to make pots. To me, art is a spiritual experience and it means a lot to me. I want to help people tap into that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One of the most recent Art Galleries and Museums Group trips Mary volunteered with was a visit to the Gallery Oldham &#8211; a full circle moment for her back to where her work had once appeared.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_amr_men_050625_MGJPG.jpg\" alt=\"Mary said volunteering with Henshaws has given her a 'purpose in life'\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Mary said volunteering with Henshaws has given her a &#8216;purpose in life&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another trip was to the Soundscapes Session at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/manchester-museum\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Museum<\/a>, which featured a spotlight on biodiversity and wildness. The group session included a full audio description and saw the group handle items, including wildlife models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One of those to attend the recent museum trip was Pat Martin, from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stockport\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Stockport<\/a>, who is medically retired and has been attending the group for eight years. She has been supported by Henshaws since 2013 when she was first diagnosed with sight loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFor me, it\u2019s about seeing something I wouldn\u2019t normally see,\u201d she explained about why she comes to the group. \u201cIn a gallery I can\u2019t see the pictures that well and have tripped over the wires because I\u2019ve got too close to be able to see. It\u2019s not that I can\u2019t do it now, it just takes me longer now\u2019. When I was diagnosed, I was devastated that my sight was going and it was frightening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Also at the session was Azam Dossajee has also been part of the group since 2022, after hearing about the charity from his neighbours &#8211; who just so happen to be the cyclists and Paralympic champions Lora Fachie, and her husband Neil, who both have visual impairments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFor me, I had sight for all my life so now living without it is a huge adjustment,\u201d he explained. \u201cMy family has been amazing but it\u2019s hard for them to understand and coming here and meeting people with similar experiences and that understanding means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Fred Hernandez, who has no sight and is now retired, also regularly attends the group and added: \u201cWhen I retired, I thought \u2018What am I going to do with myself?\u2019 You become isolated and lose the art of conversation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_amr_men_040625_HS_02.jpg\" alt=\"Mary with Azam Dossajee during the group's recent visit to Manchester Museum\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Mary with Azam Dossajee during the group&#8217;s recent visit to Manchester Museum(Image: Henshaws)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking about the work she does, Mary said: \u201cI know what it\u2019s like to be rock bottom and I know a lot of these people who have been diagnosed with sight loss are going through a similar experience.
