The piece, which first appeared at the Guggenheim Museum in New York several years earlier, was featured in an exhibition of the artist\u2019s work at the 18th-century castle and family home of Winston Churchill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJames Sheen was <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/three-men-convicted-for-stealing-maurizio-cattelans-golden-toilet-1234735866\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/three-men-convicted-for-stealing-maurizio-cattelans-golden-toilet-1234735866\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted of the theft<\/a> and received a four year prison sentence, while Michael Jones, who staked out the palace, received a 27-month prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rv-ny4-201610.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rv-ny4-201610.jpg\" alt=\"Maurizio Cattelan's 'America,' 2016, a golden toilet\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA jury at Oxford Crown Court previously found Jones guilty of burglary and Frederick Doe guilty of conspiracy to convert or transfer criminal property. Sheen, a builder who employed Jones, previously pleaded guilty to burglary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/cattelan-gold-toilet-theft-businessman-sentencing-1234742651\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/cattelan-gold-toilet-theft-businessman-sentencing-1234742651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheen was previously sentenced<\/a> to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 240 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cGiven the level of planning that enabled the raid to be carried out within five minutes, it was unusual that the offenders left such a trail of evidence in their wake. From phone messages to DNA traces found in a stolen car and on the sledgehammer used in the burglary, this wealth of evidence ultimately enabled us to secure their convictions,\u201d Shan Saunders for the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJones allegedly visited\u00a0Blenheim Palace\u00a0twice: once prior to the toilet\u2019s exhibition and again after it was installed to take photos of the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn September 14, 2019, around 5 a.m., Sheen and the accomplices drove two stolen vehicles through the palace\u2019s locked gates. As captured on CCTV, the group used sledgehammers and crowbars to break into the palace and remove the toilet. They then loaded it into the back of one of the vehicles before escaping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSheen contacted Doe in the days following the burglary about selling the gold using coded messages. The pair discussed a pay out of \u00a326,500 ($34,500) per kilogram of the stolen gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe reviewed nearly 30,000 pages of evidence as we built our case, including a significant amount of material from James Sheen\u2019s phone. We examined text messages, images, and hours of voice recordings, many of which implicated other individuals.
