{"id":185127,"date":"2025-06-15T01:15:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T01:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/185127\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T01:15:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T01:15:13","slug":"broken-bones-caused-by-osteoporosis-cost-british-economy-more-than-142-million-in-labours-first-year-in-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/185127\/","title":{"rendered":"Broken bones caused by osteoporosis cost British economy more than \u00a3142 million in Labour&#8217;s first year in power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-2281\/Meike-Leonard.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MEIKE LEONARD<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  17:08 EDT, 14 June 2025   |  Updated:  17:35 EDT, 14 June 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Broken bones caused by osteoporosis have cost the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/uk-economy\/index.html\" id=\"mol-58534970-4950-11f0-aae2-eb4add8d041c\" rel=\"noopener\">British economy<\/a> more than \u00a3142 million in Labour\u2019s first year in power, according to new research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A further 660,000 work days were estimated to have been lost due to sickness absence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Campaigners say the figures, taken from independent research commissioned by the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), are just one indicator of the toll osteoporosis is taking on the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The ROS is calling for Health Secretary <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/wes-streeting\/index.html\" id=\"mol-58508a50-4950-11f0-aae2-eb4add8d041c\" rel=\"noopener\">Wes Streeting<\/a> to deliver on his promise to improve osteoporosis services in his forthcoming <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nhs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-58578f30-4950-11f0-aae2-eb4add8d041c\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> 10-Year Plan, set to be announced next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Osteoporosis \u2013 suffered by 3.5 million people in the UK \u2013 causes bones in the body to lose strength and break more easily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The condition can be devastatingly painful, cause permanent disabilities and reduce patients\u2019 independence, causing 500,000 broken bones every year in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Half of all women and around a fifth of men over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now, new figures from the ONS on sickness absences show that musculoskeletal conditions \u2013 including osteoporosis \u2013 are the biggest single contributor of overall work days lost.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-dc70b1da963ccb4c\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/99379425-0-image-a-19_1749926958247.jpg\" height=\"438\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Campaigners say the figures, taken from independent research commissioned by the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), are just one indicator of the toll osteoporosis is taking on the UK economy.
