The Duchess of Edinburgh<\/a>\u00a0was a vision in emerald as she attended the King’s Birthday Parade today.<\/p>\n

Sophie, 60, looked typically stylish as she travelled in a carriage alongside Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, Princess Anne<\/a>‘s husband. Meanwhile, the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel of the Scots Guards, rode on horseback alongside Prince William<\/a>, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, and Princess Anne, in her role as Colonel of the Blues and Royals.<\/p>\n

For the occasion, Sophie opted for a bespoke rich emerald gown by Beulah London<\/a>, one of the royal’s long-time favourites.<\/p>\n

The mother-of-two paired her immaculately-tailored dress with a straw pillbox hat\u00a0with an ornate organza bow in the same shade by Jane Taylor London.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, her blonde locks were worn in a graceful up-do, tucked neatly underneath her headgear.<\/p>\n

The Duchess wore a natural make-up look, looking classically dewy with only minimal coverage.<\/p>\n

The royal accessorised with a diamond-encrusted pendant by G Collins & Sons, and delicate drop earrings by designer Guilia Barela.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To complete the polished look, Sophie donned a green clutch by Sophie Hapsburg and a pair of patent leather pumps from LK Bennet.<\/p>\n

Sophie’s husband the Duke of Edinburgh<\/a> – Colonel of the Scots Guards –\u00a0 rode in on horseback as he donned a military outfit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today’s celebrations follow reports that the monarch will no longer ride during the\u00a0Trooping the Colour<\/a>\u00a0celebrations due to his ongoing cancer<\/a> treatment.<\/p>\n

As a former polo player, and one of the Royal Family<\/a>‘s most accomplished equestrians, the monarch rode for years in the parade – both for his mother’s official birthday celebrations and then for his own.<\/p>\n

But he will not appear on horseback at today’s event, and will instead travel in a carriage for the procession from Buckingham Palace<\/a> to Horse Guards Parade and back, according to The Sunday Times<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is understood that he will not ride at the parade again.<\/p>\n

It was revealed ahead of the event that His Majesty had\u00a0requested a minute’s silence in tribute to the 241 passengers and crew killed when a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for Gatwick<\/a>\u00a0Airport came down on Thursday in the Indian city of Ahmedabad.<\/p>\n

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said Charles requested amendments to the Trooping the Colour programme ‘as a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy’.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trooping the Colour is a centuries-old tradition that marks the Sovereign’s official birthday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It dates back to the 17th century and is rooted in battlefield custom, when regimental flags, or ‘colours,’ were trooped in front of soldiers to ensure they could be recognised amid the smoke of combat.<\/p>\n

Last week a full-dress rehearsal, known as The Colonel’s Review, took place serving as the final run-through before the King’s official celebration.<\/p>\n

This year, the honour of trooping the Colour fell to the Coldstream Guards, who officially presented their regimental flag, known as the Colour, to King Charles.<\/p>\n

Following the Trooping ceremony, all eyes were on the royal balcony.<\/p>\n

King Charles and Queen Camilla were front and centre on the balcony to watch the Red Arrows flypast, with a host of senior royals will be alongside them.<\/p>\n

Prince William, 42, was joined by the Princess of Wales, 43 and their children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven.<\/p>\n

Princess Anne featured with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, 70.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prince Edward, 61, – who, like Anne, was fresh from his part in the procession – stood on the balcony with his wife Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 60<\/p>\n

Their son James, the Earl of Wessex, 17, did not make an appearance at this year’s Trooping the Colour.<\/p>\n

The Duke of Kent, 89, was also among the royals on the balcony, with the Duke of Gloucester, 80, and his 78-year-old wife Birgitte, the Duchess.<\/p>\n

As expected, Prince Harry, 40, and his wife Meghan Markle, 43, did not\u00a0attend this year’s celebrations.<\/p>\n

Having chosen to walk away from being working royals<\/a>, they have not been present at Trooping the Colour since 2019.<\/p>\n

The other notable absentee was Prince Andrew, 65, who remains exiled from public royal events amid the fallout from his relationship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein and the claims made by late accuser Virginia Giuffre<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Andrew’s daughters Princess Beatrice, 36, and Princess Eugenie, 35,were not there either amid Charles’s desire for a slimmed-down monarchy and to keep the focus on working royals<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Members of the royal family watched the flypast – including the RAF Red Arrows and a range of planes and helicopters – from the balcony.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In previous years it has been a moment where the royal children shine – with little Prince Louis delighting fans last year as pretended to fly one of the planes, appearing to screw up his face as he mimicked the engine’s deafening noise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Military Air Shows revealed an air restrictions map which shows the\u00a0 official route.<\/p>\n

Proposed restrictions are in the vicinity of the North Sea, East Anglia, Essex and London.<\/p>\n

The flypast went over Buckingham Palace at 1pm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Held traditionally on the second Saturday in June, regardless of the Sovereign’s actual date of birth, the\u00a0 celebrations have marked the monarch’s official birthday since the mid-1700s.<\/p>\n

Queen Elizabeth attended all but two of her Trooping the Colours, missing it in 1955 when a national rail strike resulted in the event being cancelled<\/a> and in 2020 due to lockdown restrictions.<\/p>\n

The parade is open to members of the public through an online ballot with ticketing ranging from \u00a310 to \u00a330 and is broadcast live on the BBC.<\/p>\n

What is Trooping the Colour?\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The Trooping of the Colour has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for more than 260 years.<\/p>\n

Over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare to mark the Sovereign’s official birthday.<\/p>\n

The streets are lined with crowds waving flags as the parade moves from Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade, alongside Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in carriages.<\/p>\n

The display closes with an RAF fly-past, watched by Members of the Royal Family from Buckingham Palace balcony.<\/a><\/p>\n

Once the Sovereign has arrived at Horse Guard’s Parade in Whitehall, they are greeted by a Royal salute and carry out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats.<\/p>\n

After the military bands have performed, the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Over one hundred words of command are used by the Officer in Command of the Parade to direct the several hundred soldiers.<\/p>\n

Once the Foot Guards have marched past the Sovereign, they ride back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers, before taking the salute again at the Palace from a dais.<\/p>\n

The Sovereign is then joined by other Members of the Royal Family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. A 41-gun salute is also fired in Green Park to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n
