Team mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racefans.net\/oscar-piastri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oscar Piastri<\/a>, meanwhile, looked less than comfortable, and was fortunate to emerge largely unscathed after clipping the infamous \u2018Wall of Champions\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But come qualifying, Piastri asserted himself in the intra-team battle once again. Norris found himself so far behind he goes into Sunday\u2019s race badly compromised and in serious danger of losing more vital ground in the championship.<\/p>\n<p>Change from practice to qualifying<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull made their usual significant lap time gains from Friday to Saturday. As on several previous occasions this year it was enough to swing them ahead of McLaren by a few hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n<p>But this time Mercedes had the beating of the lot of them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racefans.net\/george-russell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Russell<\/a> emerging on top in qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>Others found the going tougher on Saturday. They included Williams, who looked in great shape on Friday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racefans.net\/alexander-albon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Albon<\/a> scraped into Q3, but admitted their car was not handling as well after the wing direction changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-above-ad\">Advert | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racefans.net\/contribute-racefans\/racefans-supporter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gaps between team mates<\/p>\n<p>Russell was almost giddy with excitement over his pole position lap, which was an impressively clean and committed effort. It put him the best part of half a second clear of team mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racefans.net\/f1-information\/drivers\/andrea-kimi-antonelli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrea Kimi Antonelli<\/a>, who nonetheless scored an impressive fourth on the grid in his first appearance at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.<\/p>\n<p>But the lap time gap was even greater between another pair of team mates. Remarkably, it wasn\u2019t at Aston Martin, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racefans.net\/lance-stroll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lance Stroll<\/a> suffered his 22nd straight defeat to Fernando Alonso, nor Red Bull, where Yuki Tsunoda missed Q3 for the fourth weekend running.<\/p>\n<p>It was at McLaren, where Norris opted to use the team\u2019s new suspension and Piastri kept the old configuration.
