{"id":186374,"date":"2025-06-15T12:52:14","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T12:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/186374\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T12:52:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T12:52:14","slug":"chris-eubank-sr-names-his-toughest-ever-opponent-i-was-meant-to-be-punched-to-pieces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/186374\/","title":{"rendered":"Chris Eubank Sr Names His Toughest Ever Opponent: &#8220;I Was Meant To Be Punched To Pieces&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondsout.com\/topic\/chris-eubank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Eubank<\/a> Sr is widely regarded as one of British boxing\u2019s biggest ever stars.<\/p>\n<p>He competed throughout the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a two-weight world champion at middleweight and super-middleweight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.secondsout.com\/news\/eubank-sr-admits-he-clearly-lost-one-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">along with being involved in some of the most memorable fights the UK has ever seen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/boxing\/article-14640695\/Eubank-Benn-family-feud-boxing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He famously had clashes with the likes of Nigel Benn<\/a>, Steve Collins, Michael Watson, Joe Calzaghe and Carl Thompson, and Eubank has now named who he deems to be his toughest ever opponent.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on his <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/V4S8S-vjhlA?feature=shared\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Call Chris Eubank YouTube channel<\/a>, Eubank stated it was the final fights of his career against Thompson that he views as the toughest.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI fought a fellow in my last two fights, Carl \u2018The Cat\u2019 Thompson. These two fights were fights in which I was to be assassinated. What I mean by that is being punched to pieces where I wouldn\u2019t or shouldn\u2019t be able to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After spending his entire career at middleweight and super-middleweight, Eubank moved up to cruiserweight for the initial clash against Thompson in April 1998, suffering a unanimous decision defeat in a close encounter where two of the judges scored the bout to Thompson by just a single point.<\/p>\n<p>It meant that an immediate rematch then took place just three months later, with Thompson securing a ninth round retirement victory on this occasion, the only time in Eubank\u2019s career 52 fight that he was ever stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson\u2019s career ended with a record of 34 wins and 6 defeats, having famously handed a young David Haye his first professional loss, whilst also taking on fellow former British cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chris Eubank Sr is widely regarded as one of British boxing\u2019s biggest ever stars.
