{"id":186442,"date":"2025-06-15T13:32:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T13:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/186442\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T13:32:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T13:32:16","slug":"unlikely-friends-with-49-year-age-gap-met-during-a-lonely-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/186442\/","title":{"rendered":"Unlikely friends with 49-year age gap met during a lonely lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They love a trip to the pub and a natter about gardening<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_SG_BGS_13-06-25-lockdownfriends_02_result.jpg\" alt=\"Sammy Cheeseman and Irene Neary\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Sammy Cheeseman and Irene Neary(Image: Bristol Water)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Strangers who saved each other from loneliness during the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/coronavirus\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">covid <\/a>lockdowns are still firm friends years later &#8211; despite their 49-year age gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sammy Cheeseman, 39, says her life would not be the same now without her 88-year-old friend Irene Neary, who became her unlikely companion back in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Both women found themselves living alone when the restrictions on socialising were imposed, so Sammy turned to Bristol charity The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/health\/pubs-play-vital-role-helping-9344792\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Marmalade Trust<\/a> to offer her help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The trust, based in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/st-pauls\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">St Pauls<\/a>, connects volunteers with people suffering from loneliness by offering them support and social connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sammy was matched with Irene and their first phone conversation saw them find common ground, which has since grown into weekly catch-up calls and regular trips out to cafes, shops and pubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sammy, a premises officer at Bristol Water, said: &#8220;Irene and I hit it off straight away due to our shared love of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/gardening\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">gardening<\/a>. She&#8217;s so ingrained in my life now, I wouldn&#8217;t know what to do without her and I know she feels the same.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_SG_BGS_13-06-25-lockdownfriends_03_result.jpg\" alt=\"Sammy Cheeseman and Irene Neary\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Sammy Cheeseman and Irene Neary(Image: Bristol Water)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI look after her and she looks after me. My life is better for having Irene in it \u2013 and she\u2019s good fun to take to the pub!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sammy received the King\u2019s Award for Voluntary Service for her work with the charity. The awards, which are the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary groups, celebrate the outstanding work of charities and their volunteers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sammy added: &#8220;It\u2019s fantastic we have been recognised for this award. Everyone at the charity works so hard, I am very proud to be part of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The pair talk every Wednesday and Irene has even accompanied Sammy on a social event with some of her Bristol Water colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_SG_BGS_13-06-25-lockdownfriends_result.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Sammy Cheeseman and Irene Neary pictured during covid Christmas lockdown(Image: Bristol Water)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Irene said: \u201cSammy really is wonderful. She helps me with the garden and we go out to eat, I\u2019m so glad we got matched together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOur friendship means so much to me, it\u2019s made me secure as I know I\u2019ve got someone who can help me if I need anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The award was given to the Marmalade Trust in 2023, but the charity hosted its official celebration in spring 2025.
