{"id":186557,"date":"2025-06-15T14:30:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T14:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/186557\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T14:30:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T14:30:15","slug":"world-class-player-backed-to-play-centre-back-for-celtic-ahead-of-auston-trusty-and-liam-scales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/186557\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;World-class&#8217; player backed to play centre-back for Celtic ahead of Auston Trusty and Liam Scales"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Celtic\u2019s defence produced an interesting season last time out. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brendan Rodgers\u2019 side didn\u2019t concede until Premiership game number seven against Ross County, including four goals shipped after 20 league matches. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/opinion\/three-centre-backs-celtic-should-target-in-summer-transfer-window-to-partner-cameron-carter-vickers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cameron Carter-Vickers is the main guy<\/a> at the back, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/auston-trusty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auston Trusty<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/liam-scales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liam Scales<\/a> fighting for the other spot, but unable to cement their place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celtic\u2019s<\/a> XI, despite that strong start. <\/p>\n<p>There has been a lot of noise around Celtic needing another centre-back, especially with Maik Nawrocki not being provided with the chances. <\/p>\n<p>The supporters want to see more quality brought in, especially after the iffy performances in 2025, as well as questions over how they would fare in the revamped Champions League over the long run. <\/p>\n<p>But is Rodgers\u2019 defensive answer closer to home? <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2180735102-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Auston Trusty and Liam Scales in action for Celtic against Atalanta in the Champions League.\" class=\"wp-image-269838\" \/>Photo by Jonathan Moscrop\/Getty ImagesKieran Tierney to play at centre-back for Celtic?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/news\/chris-sutton-says-celtic-boss-brendan-rodgers-has-signed-a-player-with-question-mark-over-his-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kieran Tierney has returned to Celtic<\/a>, and fans are over the moon that one of their own has returned to where it all began. <\/p>\n<p>Rather than playing at left-back, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/kieran-tierney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tierney<\/a> has excelled in his career, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/frank-mcavennie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank McAvennie<\/a> suggested that he could play as the left-sided centre-back. <\/p>\n<p>If that happens, McAvennie told his Let Me Be Frank Podcast that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/greg-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greg Taylor<\/a> could then stay and still play enough matches in his usual position. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many times have we been looking for a left-sided centre-half?\u201d asked McAvennie. \u201cHe\u2019s (Tierney) your man. He will step in there, and then Greg (Taylor) can play in there (at left-back). <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it could work. The two of them could play 30 games a season. It\u2019s not a bad thing. Whether Celtic want to give Greg the money that he feels that he deserves. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hoping that he would sign, but it looks like he isn\u2019t going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Greg Taylor\u2019s issues at Celtic amid \u2018world-class\u2019 Tierney capture<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/opinion\/three-underrated-celtic-stars-who-shone-against-adversity-across-2024-25-including-sub-who-bided-his-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor has divided opinion<\/a> like nobody else before, and some would argue that it\u2019s probably the right time to leave.<\/p>\n<p>McAvennie highlighted Taylor\u2019s issues in defence, all whilst calling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/transfers\/simon-donnelly-says-brendan-rodgers-has-just-made-the-signing-of-the-summer-for-celtic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tierney a \u2018world-class\u2019 player<\/a>, as the duo go in opposite directions. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not going to have a go at Greg,\u201d said McAvennie. \u201cI think he has been magnificent for Celtic. I think he has been a wonderful talent. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defence has been a wee bit (questionable), for me. But going forward, and doing everything that Brendan wants him to do was magnificent, by Greg.
