{"id":187123,"date":"2025-06-15T19:39:17","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T19:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/187123\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T19:39:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T19:39:17","slug":"left-behind-town-where-it-will-take-ages-for-people-to-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/187123\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Left behind town&#8217; where it &#8216;will take ages for people to return&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s hope a further \u00a320m to spend on the town centre over the next decade may help turn things around<\/p>\n<p>13:56, 15 Jun 2025Updated 14:02, 15 Jun 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_Grange-Precinct-circa-1985.jpg\" alt=\"Grange Precinct, Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside circa 1985.\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Grange Precinct, Birkenhead, Wirral, Merseyside circa 1985.(Image: Mirrorpix)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People in a town centre described as dead remain hopeful things could still be turned around after \u00a320m was announced for the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This week, the UK Government announced<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/three-ignored-areas-merseyside-share-31836084\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> 25 trailblazer neighbourhoods which will each receive up to \u00a320m over the next decade as part of a new fund to drive change in areas. <\/a>Though more details need to be published, the government said the money will \u201csupport communities to drive forward the changes they want to see in their neighbourhoods\u201d including \u201cimprovements people can see on their doorstep, champion local leadership, foster community engagement and strengthen social cohesion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Three areas have been included in Merseyside including <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a>, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/speke\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Speke<\/a> and central <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/birkenhead\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birkenhead<\/a>. The government said it would work to make sure \u201cplaces that have been too easily left behind are no longer ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The announcement this week is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/work-21000-new-homes-350m-31239214\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the latest from the government in recent weeks of new funding for central Birkenhead.<\/a> As part of a \u00a31.6bn transport announcement, Birkenhead is set to get additional funding for bus and active travel routes through the Hind Street Urban Village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Hind Street project is a major redevelopment of land between Green Lane and Birkenhead Central train stations. The development will eventually see <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/update-plan-build-1600-homes-31554924\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the removal of the Birkenhead tunnel flyovers that cut off the site from Birkenhead town centre, 1,600 new homes for people of all ages, as well as new green spaces, businesses, a school, and health services.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/wirral\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Wirral<\/a> Council leader Cllr Paula Basnett said it was \u201can incredibly welcome boost for Birkenhead as we move forward with our plans to bring about the much-needed and long overdue improvements,\u201d adding: \u201cThis additional funding will play a significant role in helping our efforts to make a real and positive difference to the town centre and surrounding areas and deliver for these communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Birkenhead\u2019s Labour MP and DWP minister Alison McGovern praised government money for housing and defence, adding: &#8220;I am especially pleased that central Birkenhead will receive targeted neighbourhood funding that will make sure that as Birkenhead&#8217;s economy grows, no one is left behind. Labour in power are taking the right decisions for the Wirral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cllr Pat Cleary, who represents the Green Party, said the funding was positive and \u201cnot to be sniffed at\u201d but might not be as game changing as hoped. Going forward, he felt working with those already working in Birkenhead needed to be the focus to deliver real results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Pointing to Argyle Street where the council invested \u00a351,000 improving shop fronts, he added: \u201cI would argue those smaller funds have a much bigger bang for their buck. It\u2019s recognising this and focusing on those organisations bringing others into the fold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThey aren\u2019t just there to make money. Roadworks currently take up some of the town centre as new paving and road layouts are put down and there have been no shortage of computer generated images of what the town will look like in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The local authority has built two new office blocks while the old House of Fraser has been demolished. Several projects are in the pipeline including more changes to the waterfront and a new Birkenhead Market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking to people across the town, there was<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/town-people-seen-go-thriving-29358410\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> a strong feeling from people of all ages that the town centre needs more stuff to do<\/a>. One woman <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">told the ECHO<\/a> she always went out in Liverpool, adding: \u201cIf you want to get young people in, it\u2019s drinks, shops, and food, activities like mini golf. That will just get people in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_Pyramids-Shopping-CentreBirkenheadWirralPic-Andrew-Teebay.jpg\" alt=\"People told the ECHO Birkenhead was much quieter than it used to be\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>People told the ECHO Birkenhead was much quieter than it used to be(Image: Andrew Teebay Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Iona Wattison <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">told the ECHO<\/a>: \u201cBirkenhead is dead. At one time you could buy anything in Birkenhead. At one time, you could go into town in the 80s and you could buy anything. The market was thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Though Tony Simpson felt \u00a320m would only scratch the service, he felt more investment was needed in the town especially around issues like drugs and crime. As part of any development going forward, he wanted to see social housing right in the heart of the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cI think <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/thousands-people-want-live-distinctive-31324343\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Miller\u2019s Quay [at Wirral Waters]<\/a> shouldn\u2019t be where it is. It should be in the town centre, developments that bring people into the centre and then they are there to do their shopping in the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cCity centres have to be turned back into population centres. If you have to drive to the town centre, you aren\u2019t going to do it because it\u2019s so much easier just to order online or go to our equivalent of a strip mall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cYou need to make them attractive places to live and build the place around that. Hamilton Square is gorgeous but there\u2019s nothing really there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Tracey Dennis, who currently rents, is one of those who is hoping to eventually buy a home. She said: \u201cThere\u2019s still nowhere I can afford by the time you pay your rent, food, gas, and electricity and we aren\u2019t poor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere\u2019s so many empty buildings, there\u2019s so many gorgeous buildings that are left to ruin now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On the edge of the town centre is the Number Seven caf\u00e9 and social supermarket offering a variety of different foods at lower prices than in mainstream shops. Set up with the help of the late Baron Frank Field in 2018, it now has over 2,000 members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Caroline Noble, the general assistant manager, said social isolation and loneliness were two of the biggest reasons people visited them while the rising cost of living was still a pressure for many, including the running costs of Number Seven itself. In order to revive the town centre, she felt more needed to be done to entice smaller businesses back in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Going forward, she hopes the trailblazer project would work with existing charities and organisations, adding: \u201cYou have got a group of people with existing skills and knowledge working in Birkenhead, in some cases for a very long time. I would hope those people would be included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She said: \u201cIt\u2019s funding for the community. It should be members of that community and the people who work in that community,\u201d adding: \u201cIt\u2019s not short and sharp. It\u2019s funded over a long period of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Birkenhead town centre has taken a long time to get to the stage it is at so it will take a long time to regenerate.
