{"id":187312,"date":"2025-06-15T21:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T21:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/187312\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T21:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T21:23:10","slug":"ten-london-charities-under-investigation-after-hmrc-uncovers-22m-in-cashed-cheques","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/187312\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten London charities under investigation after HMRC uncovers \u00a322m in cashed cheques"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four charities serving Haringey and Barnet are among several being investigated by the Charity Commission after \u00a322million in cashed cheques were found by HMRC investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Two charities operating in Haringey \u2013 Inspirations, which supports children\u2019s education and training, and One Heart-Lev Echod, which supports people with health issues \u2013 are among those being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of Beis Soroh Schneirer, which supports Beis Soroh Schneirer School in Hendon, is being looked into, while\u00a0Friends of Beis Chinuch Lebonos Trust, which supports an Edgware school of the same name, is also being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>An unannounced visit from HMRC to a company in Hackney discovered 105 charities in total had cashed cheques to the value of \u00a322m between December 2021 and March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>However ten, including the Haringey and Barnet ones, have been \u201cprioritised\u201d for investigation by the regulator. The Charity Commission said this was due to the number of cheques issued and the total value of cheques cashed by these ten charities.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator said: \u201cThe commission expects to extend the number of charities under investigation over time. Using powers available to the commission during an inquiry, the regulator will determine the facts around how these charities have transferred funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also investigate how trustees had oversight of what happened to funds exchanged for the cheques, and if this cash has been used properly to support what the charities were set up to do.
