As of June this year, 11 of the Schengen Area\u2019s 29 countries \u2014 including Austria, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands \u2014 had notified the European Commission<\/a> of plans to reintroduce border controls. Ten of them announced the controls over a period of six months, while several of the countries\u2019 checks were just the most recent extension of a long stretch of back-to-back controls.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Schengen is \u201cmelting before our eyes,\u201d said Spanish Member of the European Parliament Juan Fernando L\u00f3pez Aguilar, a Social Democrat.<\/p>\n When EU countries, one by one, shuttered their borders during the coronavirus crisis in an ultimately successful attempt to keep Covid from rolling over the continent, L\u00f3pez Aguilar led a charge to reboot the EU\u2019s free-travel zone<\/a>.<\/p>\n But \u201cthings have deteriorated severely from the pandemic onward,\u201d according to the Spaniard. In their plans to tackle migration concerns, countries have started resorting to internal controls \u201cfar too often,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Germany, too, cited \u201cserious threats to public security\u201d caused by illegal migration when it imposed checks on all its borders<\/a> last year.
