Amid his ongoing legal battle<\/a> to restore automatic state-backed police protection for his family, Prince Harry believes that the withdrawal of security<\/a> was a calculated attempt to force him and his wife Meghan to return to full-time royal work.<\/p>\n

Harry left court on 9 April feeling disheartened by what he heard during two days\u2019 worth of mostly-private appeal hearings at London\u2019s Royal Courts of Justice. In public comments reported by The Telegraph<\/a> and People<\/a>, Harryconfessed that his \u201cworst fears have been confirmed\u201d following the presentation of secret evidence in court. \u201cThat\u2019s really sad,\u201d he said of the legal disclosures.<\/p>\n

Harry and Meghan\u2019s initial proposal for post-royal life included living abroad but within the Commonwealth while simultaneously continuing their work to represent the monarchy. \u201cWe were trying to create this happy house,\u201d Harry said of their original plan, which was presented to the late Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> prior to their departure from the UK in 2020.<\/p>\n

After discussing the Sussexes\u2019 plans for post-royal life in a meeting now dubbed ‘the Sandringham Summit<\/a>‘ in January 2020, Harry understood that his taxpayer-funded security would remain in place. The Queen at the time also expressed in a letter that the couple\u2019s provision of \u201ceffective security\u201d due to \u201cthe well-documented history of targeting of the Sussex family by extremists\u201d was \u201cof paramount importance\u201d to her, court documents revealed<\/a> in 2023. However, a month later, he was informed that the provision of security would be removed.<\/p>\n

Since, Harry has legally challenged the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), the governmental body responsible for making security arrangements and decisions. At the core of his ongoing rift with other members of the royal family is Harry\u2019s belief that the removal of security was a tactic to force him and Meghan to return to their former royal roles by making visits to the UK onerous and unsafe. Connecting the dots between RAVEC\u2019s decision and the perceived attempt to force the Sussexes\u2019 hand \u201cwas difficult to swallow\u201d, Harry says.<\/p>\n

Harry\u2019s legal team has argued in court that RAVEC\u2019s decision was not made in accordance with their typical standard procedures, and that Harry was \u201csingled out for different, unjustified, and inferior treatment\u201d. His team also argued that the same reasons for the withdrawal of the Sussexes\u2019 security does not apply to other public figures, including celebrities and former prime ministers. <\/p>\n

Harry previously lost an appeal<\/a> to pay privately for his own police protection. Home Office lawyers opposed the idea of allowing wealthy people to “buy” security from the police. Harry argued<\/a> that his private security can’t access Home Office or security services databases to know about threats against him.<\/p>\n

While speaking with reporters outside of the court last week, Harry suggested that he could forgive many events that have occurred since 2016 \u2014 the year he met Meghan \u2014 but compromising his and his family\u2019s safety is not one of them. Of the \u201chighly confidential\u201d evidence he heard in court, Harry said: \u201cPeople would be shocked by what\u2019s being held back.\u201d The experience has made him \u201cexhausted and overwhelmed\u201d, but he is ultimately \u201cdriven by exposing injustice\u201d. When he plainly sees a wrongdoing, he wants to \u201cget under the bonnet and fix it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Over the years, Harry has been embroiled in several legal battles and victories since stepping down as a senior royal. (Crucially, he secured a historic settlement<\/a> and a public apology to his mother, Princess Diana, from the publisher of The Sun due to phone hacking and other privacy intrusions earlier this year.) However, Harry\u2019s battle to restore his police protection stands out among them all. \u201cThis one has always mattered the most,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
