{"id":187519,"date":"2025-06-15T23:19:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T23:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/187519\/"},"modified":"2025-06-15T23:19:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-15T23:19:09","slug":"stubhub-pledges-to-leave-uk-over-cap-on-ticket-resale-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/187519\/","title":{"rendered":"StubHub Pledges to Leave UK Over Cap on Ticket Resale Prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stubhub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StubHub<\/a> is reportedly threatening to leave the U.K. over a proposed cap on ticket-resale prices.<\/p>\n<p>As the Financial Times (FT) <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7cbab211-fac6-43b4-aa74-d60577c3d70b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Sunday (June 15), the British government is considering plans to limit ticket resales to their original price, or limit increases to 30%. The goal is to crackdown on scalpers charging steep prices to fans attending sporting events or concerts, the report says.<\/p>\n<p>But secondary ticketing sites like StubHub argue that this could drive away legitimate resellers and force ticket buyers to use social media black markets and run the risk of <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/security-and-risk\/2025\/21-percent-of-financial-scams-start-on-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being scammed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>StubHub International CEO <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bobkupbens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bob Kupbens<\/a> told the FT that \u201ceven at 30%, we feel very strongly that would make it very challenging for us to operate\u201d in the U.K.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said StubHub would probably be forced to leave Great Britain, its largest market, given \u201cthe things that we do, the fraud protections, the things that we build on the platform, the customer service with a live person\u2009\u2026\u2009it has a cost\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>StubHub contends it has a transparent and safe marketplace for buying and selling tickets, with 24-hour customer service and guarantees of comparable replacement tickets or refunds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investors wouldn\u2019t allow us to burn money if we didn\u2019t think there was a viable business here,\u201d\u00a0Kupbens said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder a policy landscape where a price cap was implemented, StubHub International would be unable to offer our\u2009\u2026 guarantee or sustain our levels of customer service. As such, we would be forced to cease our U.K. operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The British government began looking into this issue last year after thousands of fans of British rock duo Oasis waited hours to reserve seats for the band\u2019s highly anticipated reunion tour, only to run into price increases due to Ticketmaster\u2019s <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/restaurant-technology\/2024\/dynamic-pricing-proves-very-meaningful-for-struggling-restaurants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cdynamic pricing\u201d<\/a> strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K.\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said earlier this year that Ticketmaster may have <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cpi-posts\/uk-watchdog-scrutinizes-ticketmasters-dynamic-pricing-amid-oasis-ticket-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misled fans<\/a> into paying more than expected for the Oasis tickets, and urged the company to be more transparent in its pricing and ticket labeling practices.<\/p>\n<p>In related news, PYMNTS wrote last week about the rise of <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/pos-innovation\/2025\/airports-and-stadiums-say-mobile-first-checkout-is-big-fan-favorite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mobile-first checkout<\/a> at stadiums and other concert venues\u2019\u00a0point-of-sale (POS) systems.<\/p>\n<p>According to research from the PYMNTS Intelligence report <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/tracker_posts\/in-any-event-how-smart-pos-technology-is-transforming-entertainment-and-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMay 2025 Self-Service Commerce Tracker\u00ae Series,\u201d<\/a> 57% of event-goers would spend more with in-seat ordering available, while 81% said they wanted the option of ordering food from their seats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a significant revenue lever, and one that stadiums are tapping through digital POS systems,\u201d\u00a0that report said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor travel and entertainment brands, the goal is clear: deliver faster, more personalized and intuitive payment experiences that cater to consumer expectations.
