Industry groups are now arguing that the law must be redone to ease that consumption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU is clearly keen to buy more American LNG,\u201d said Fran\u00e7ois-R\u00e9gis Mouton, the European director of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers. \u201cBut then at the same time, they put in place a methane emission regulation that totally jeopardizes this. We\u2019re doing everything to reopen the methane regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/11761409-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6756432\"  \/>The gas spews into the atmosphere during fuel and coal production, acting as a potent pollutant and the second-highest contributor to global warming after CO2. | Teresa Suarez\/EPA<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Monday\u2019s energy ministers\u2019 meeting, EU capitals <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/200192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have been preparing<\/a> a consensus document that presses the European Commission, the EU\u2019s executive in Brussels, to at least review the methane rules.<\/p>\n<p>A draft of the document, seen by POLITICO, asks the Commission to \u201cspeedily assess\u201d whether to pare back several energy laws, including the methane regulation. And it argues the rules \u201cmight impact the cooperation with economic operators from outside of the EU\u201d \u2014\u00a0likely a veiled reference to the U.S. But it stops short of recommending specific changes.<\/p>\n<p>The seven EU countries want to go further.
