(ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A study by the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Science (IMAS), the University of Tasmania and the Australian Antarctic Division found their <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-01\/imas-southern-right-whale-population-concerns\/105238712\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105238712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">population recovery seems to have recently stalled at a level far below pre-whaling<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Researchers questioned whether it might be <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-01\/imas-southern-right-whale-population-concerns\/105238712\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105238712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the &#8220;end of an era for southern right whale recovery&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are estimated to be about 2,000-3,500 southern right whales in the Australian population, but that is a long way off the estimated pre-whaling numbers of 70,000-160,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Comparatively, there are an estimated 60,000 humpbacks in Australia&#8217;s east and west populations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Point Ann is one of three large aggregation areas for the whales in Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Challenges to long-term understanding<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Establishing long-term data sets to better understand the animals&#8217; recovery has proven difficult because the breeding patterns for each whale are not annual, making tracking numbers challenging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2021, the group spotted 70 mother and calf pairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That dipped to 30 in 2023 and 60 last year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A white whale calf\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/878cc91dd1cd4fcb0b07f3b91ed051d6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">WA&#8217;s south coast has become a nursery for whales each winter. (Supplied: Brett Peake)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There is no clear pattern as to whether they&#8217;re increasing or declining, it&#8217;s very fluctuating,&#8221; Ms Fannei said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They give birth every three to five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s elevating in recent years \u2026 individuals don&#8217;t visit the coast every year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Fannei and Mr Fabry said the project relied on volunteers and the support of local business to continue its work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For long-term studies, having local support is so important \u2014 we need to know in the next three or five years [whether] we can keep doing this,&#8221; Ms Fennai said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Each winter, southern right whales arrive on Western Australia&#8217;s southern coast to birth their young.
