The late Queen would have been \u201chorrified\u201d by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle<\/a>\u2019s criticism of the Commonwealth<\/a>, a royal expert has said. The Duchess of Sussex was appointed as vice-president of the Commonwealth Trust in March 2019, while her husband was president, with the hope the couple would breathe fresh life into the voluntary association of 56 nations \u2013 most of which were once part of the British Empire.<\/p>\n

At the time, Meghan even claimed her work would \u201chighlight the trust\u2019s partnerships with young people across the Commonwealth<\/a>, and in particular its work supporting women and girls\u201d. But the couple left the trust when they stepped down as working royals in 2020 \u2013 and when they aired their Netflix<\/a> docuseries in December 2022, the pair hired experts to criticise the institution<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Daily Mail\u2019s diary editor Richard Eden said: \u201cIt\u2019s almost lucky that Queen Elizabeth<\/a> isn\u2019t alive to see this because the Commonwealth was so central to her and bringing people together. It\u2019s a voluntary organisation whereas [in the documentary], it\u2019s dismissed as this colonial body used for Britain to extract money and resources from the rest of the world. She would have been horrified.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the documentary, academic Afua Hirsch called the Commonwealth<\/a> \u201cEmpire 2.0\u201d while author Kehinde Andrews claimed \u201cnothing has changed\u201d from the UK\u2019s colonial past, apart from the Royal Family\u2019s \u201cbetter PR\u201d.<\/p>\n
