\n\tNick Cave<\/a> said Morrissey<\/a> recently contacted him with an offer to provide vocals on a new song of his. It\u2019s something Cave, a longtime fan<\/a>, said he \u201cwould have been happy to do,\u201d were it not for the fact that Morrissey wasn\u2019t asking him to sing a verse or provide backing vocals, but intro the track with \u201can unnecessarily provocative\u201d spoken-word speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tResponding to a fan question on his \u201cRed Hand Files\u201d website<\/a> regarding his relationship with Morrissey, Cave said the former Smiths frontman reached out to him last year about the song via email. Cave called the track \u201cquite lovely,\u201d but said it \u201cbegan with a lengthy and entirely irrelevant Greek bouzouki intro.\u201d (A bouzouki is a long-necked string instrument.)<\/p>\n

\n\tOver this instrumental intro, Cave continued, Morrissey wanted him to deliver a \u201cslightly silly anti-woke screed [Morrissey] had written.\u201d Cave did not share any details about the salvo, and even admitted, \u201cI suppose I agreed with the sentiment on some level.\u201d But, he said, \u201cit just wasn\u2019t my thing,\u201d so he \u201cpolitely declined\u201d the offer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI try to keep politics, cultural or otherwise, out of the music I am involved with,\u201d Cave said. \u201cI find that it has a diminishing effect and is antithetical to whatever it is I am trying to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite not knowing what exactly Morrissey had written for Cave, it\u2019s not exactly difficult to imagine. Over the past few years, Morrissey has regularly courted controversy with some of his more far-right views<\/a>, especially over immigration. Since he released his last solo album, 2020\u2019s I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, Morrissey has teased several<\/a> follow-ups, but none have been released yet. In an interview last year, Morrissey claimed that one LP had been \u201cgagged\u201d <\/a>and \u201cidiot culture\u201d was preventing its release.<\/p>\n

\n\tEven without new music, though, Morrissey has remained busy on the road. He completed a run of North American shows<\/a> earlier this spring, and just kicked off a European trek that\u2019ll stretch through August.
