If the two sides \u2014 representing an almost $2 trillion<strong> <\/strong>trade relationship \u2014 don\u2019t reach a deal by July 9, that will go up to 50 percent, according to Trump\u2019s threats. The U.S. also levies a 50 percent tariff on steel and aluminum, plus 25 percent on cars.<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the G7 summit in the Canadian Rockies, the European Commission and Council presidents urged Trump \u2014 without naming him \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/200255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to end his tariff war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/eu-prepared-accept-flat-10-us-tariff-with-conditions-handelsblatt-reports-2025-06-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a> and the German financial daily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/politik\/international\/g7-gipfel-wie-die-g7-in-kanada-um-ihre-existenz-ringt\/100134729.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Handelsblatt<\/a>\u00a0reported that the EU is willing to accept a 10 percent tariff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs agreed by [European Commission] President Ursula von der Leyen and President Trump, the European Commission remains fully engaged in seeking a common solution by July 9,\u201d Pinho said. \u201cOur clear preference is a negotiated, balanced, and mutually beneficial outcome. However, if a satisfactory agreement cannot be reached, all instruments and options will remain\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EU trade ministers in May already urged the Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-wont-accept-uk-china-style-tariff-deal-with-trump-ministers-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not to accept a deal like the U.K.\u2019s<\/a>, which does allow the 10 percent so-called \u201creciprocal\u201d tariff.<\/p>\n<p>Brussels has repeatedly offered Trump a zero-for-zero mutual deal on industrial goods, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eus-zero-for-zero-tariff-stall-us-pushback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that proposal has been stranded in recent weeks<\/a>, with the Trump administration dreading the need to pass it via Congress to adopt it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Like most countries, the EU is subject to a 10 percent baseline tariff.
