{"id":189885,"date":"2025-06-16T20:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T20:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/189885\/"},"modified":"2025-06-16T20:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T20:41:09","slug":"purdue-pharma-wins-broad-support-from-u-s-states-for-7-4-billion-opioid-settlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/189885\/","title":{"rendered":"Purdue Pharma wins broad support from U.S. states for $7.4-billion opioid settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/6NTYIL5ZT5ES3HX5DQCCAQCLMQ.JPG?auth=79ac5405349f01e6c9d2c4d4e9b4f27157e7035913075de7a599b61ef080b8d2&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A proposed US$7.4-billion settlement is intended to resolve claims that Purdue Pharma\u2019s pain medication OxyContin caused an opioid addiction crisis across the U.S.George Frey\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Purdue Pharma has won support from the attorneys general of 55 U.S. states and territories for its US$7.4-billion settlement to resolve thousands of opioid lawsuits against the drugmaker and its owners, members of the Sackler family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A framework for the settlement had been announced in January by New York Attorney General Letitia James and other states, and the support announced on Monday could help Purdue Pharma win court approval for its bankruptcy reorganization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The US$7.4-billion payment is intended to resolve claims that the drug maker\u2019s pain medication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/oxycodone\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/oxycodone\/\">OxyContin<\/a> caused a nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/opioid-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/opioid-crisis\/\">opioid addiction crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It includes about US$6.5-billion from the Sacklers and about US$900-million from Purdue Pharma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ontario-opioids-deaths-decrease-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More than 2,200 Ontarians died from opioids last year as numbers trend downward, data show<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Payouts would begin after the drug maker wins sufficient creditor support for its Chapter 11 plan. Money would go to individuals, state and local governments, as well as Native American tribes, and the Sacklers would cede control of Purdue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cFor decades, the Sacklers put profits over people, and played a leading role in fueling the epidemic,\u201d James said in a statement. \u201cWhile no amount of money can fully heal the destruction they caused, these funds will save lives and help our communities fight back against the opioid crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">According to several attorneys general, Monday\u2019s agreements do not include Oklahoma, which in 2019 reached a US$270-million settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sacklers to resolve opioid-related claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Last June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an earlier settlement that would have given the Sacklers broad immunity from opioid-related civil lawsuits.
