A \u201cviable explosive device” has been found at the scene of an arson attack in Newry that destroyed several vehicles.<\/p>\n
Detectives have renewed an appeal for information following a fire and the discovery of the device in the Killeen School Road area, during the early hours of today (Monday, June 16).<\/p>\n
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 3:15am, due to a report of a fire at business premises in the area.<\/p>\n
PSNI officers attended alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the blaze.<\/p>\n
PSNI Detective Sergeant Lewis said on Monday evening that upon arrival \u201cofficers noted that multiple vehicles had been damaged as a result of the ignition, which is being treated as deliberate\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhilst checking the surrounding area, officers located a suspicious object,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
“The Killeen School Road area was closed as a precaution until Army Technical Officers (ATO) could attend.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe object was deemed to be a viable explosive device, before being made safe and removed from the scene for further forensic examination.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe road has since reopened and enquiries are on-going to determine the full circumstances.<\/p>\n
“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed anything suspicious, or who may have dash-cam, CCTV or other relevant video footage, to get in contact with us on 101 quoting reference number 156 of 16\/06\/25.<\/p>\n
