After Top Gun: Maverick earned rave reviews and soared past $1.4 billion at the global box office, it was no surprise when Paramount began developing Top Gun 3. However, Tom Cruise isn\u2019t one to dive into a sequel without purpose, and the creative team is taking their time to ensure they get it right.<\/p>\n
While speaking with ScreenRant<\/a>, director Joseph Kosinski revealed that screenwriter Ehren Kruger is hard at work on the script for Top Gun 3. \u201cEhren Kruger is writing the script as we speak,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing \u2014 working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren\u2019s into it now, so we\u2019ll see how it comes along.\u201c<\/p>\n Kosinski went on to tease that the idea for the sequel is \u201cso ambitious\u201d that he couldn\u2019t turn it down. \u201cIt was about coming up with an idea that \u2014 again \u2014 felt like a new challenge,\u201d he said. \u201cSomething that opens up the story in a way you just can\u2019t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That\u2019s what\u2019s exciting to me.\u201c<\/p>\n Related Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick alongside Kruger and Eric Warren Singer, also seems to be back for the third installment. Just last month<\/a>, he said that the story had been cracked. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t hard,\u201d McQuarrie said. \u201cI thought it would be, and that\u2019s a good place to go from is you walk into the room going, \u2018Come on, what are we going to do?\u2019 and Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, \u2018Mhm actually,\u2019 and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there.\u201c<\/p>\n You have to wonder what sort of aerial insanity Tom Cruise can give us with the sequel that he hasn\u2019t already done. The actor is expected to reprise his role as Pete \u2018Maverick\u2019 Mitchell alongside Miles Teller as Bradley \u2018Rooster\u2019 Bradshaw and Glen Powell as Jake \u2018Hangman\u2019 Seresin.<\/p>\n
