It comes as figures from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/hmrc\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HMRCLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HMRC<\/a> have revealed that a staggering \u00a32.2billion was withdrawn last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The data shows a notable rise in activity among those aged 55 to 56, with 120,000 making <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-hmrc-change-income-tax-35385315\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"taxable withdrawalsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">taxable withdrawals<\/a> in 2023-24. This equates to an 18 per cent rise over the last five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Under the existing regulations, individuals can access 25 per cent of their pension pot tax-free once they reach 55, up to a maximum of \u00a3268,275. Withdrawals above this limit are taxed as income, as reported by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/savings-banks\/thousands-urged-withdraw-pension-cash-35398940\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"MirrorLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Jason Hollands of Bestinvest weighed in on the situation, noting: &#8220;Demographic patterns will be a factor. But other possible influences are a rise in business exits and second property disposals ahead of the election enabling more people to take early <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/retirement\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"retirementLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">retirement<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Daniel Hough from RBC Brewin Dolphin, looking at it from a wealth management angle, remarked: &#8220;Retirement is lasting longer for people \u2013 by accessing their <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-payment-delay-35400834\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"pensionsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">pensions<\/a> at 55, there will be more pressure on providing a sustainable income throughout retirement, however long it may last.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/7_Man-with-cash-in-wallet.jpg\" alt=\"An unidentified person is counting money in their wallet. \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Data indicates there&#8217;s been an 18% rise in those making taxable withdrawals in the past five years aged 55 to 56(Image: Getty )<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Experts warn of risks as numerous savers tap into pensions before retirement, with Andrew Tricker of Lubbock Fine Wealth Management stating, &#8220;The large number of savers withdrawing from their pensions before actually retiring is very concerning. Many of them are withdrawing too much \u2013 and too early.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Financial specialists caution that savers might overspend to avoid inheritance tax due to new Labour Party regulations. Kate Smith of Aegon said, &#8220;The expectation is that those individuals with large estates will access their pensions earlier to avoid inheritance tax, and later life tax planning will become increasingly important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The plans have caused &#8220;concern and some confusion&#8221; for those nearing retirement, according to Mr Hough. Chancellor Rachel Reeves had announced the end of inheritance tax reliefs on pension savings by 2027, prompting many to reassess their pension drawdown strategies, as Britons can currently pass on pension wealth tax-free.<\/p>\n<p>How can I find out how much State Pension I could get?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You can get a State Pension forecast online from the Check your State Pension service <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.
