{"id":190598,"date":"2025-06-17T03:05:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T03:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/190598\/"},"modified":"2025-06-17T03:05:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T03:05:15","slug":"artificial-reef-aims-to-bring-wild-oysters-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/190598\/","title":{"rendered":"Artificial reef aims to bring wild oysters back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Evans<\/p>\n<p>Local Democracy Reporting Service<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/be7316a0-4aa8-11f0-9276-5d542b98bc12.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"Getty Images A group of oysters.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Wild Oyster Project is in its final stage after being on hold for almost two years<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Wild Oysters are set to be introduced into Conwy Bay after an almost two-year delay was brought to an end by a succession of storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Bangor University have been given permission to proceed to the final stage of the project and &#8220;reseed&#8221; a 660-tonne artificial reef.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Harbourmaster Matthew Forbes said the project would &#8220;finally move towards completion&#8221; with the first distribution run set to take place on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Wild oysters, once a major part of Wales&#8217;s fishing industry, have <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-56580860\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">been in decline<\/a> as a result of over-fishing, changes in water quality, and disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It was first reported in July 2023 that Bangor University was working with the Zoological Society of London to reintroduce wild oysters into the waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Conwy Council&#8217;s Harbour Advisory Committee met this week for an update on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Speaking at the meeting, harbourmaster Matthew Forbes said the reef was initially &#8220;above the marine licensed permitted height&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Over the last couple of years, storms have knocked the reef height down,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Mr Forbes said Natural Resources Wales had agreed the project could now move forward and 76 bags of oysters were ready to be distributed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Meeting chairwoman Joan Vaughan said it would be &#8220;lovely&#8221; to have oysters in the River Conwy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/25663580-4aa5-11f0-bbaa-4bc03e0665b7.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A fisherman scrubs an oyster just above a black bucket. On the left, there is a bucket filled with dirty water from the oysters.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oysters used to be popular in Welsh waters but numbers have fallen over the past 200 years<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Native oysters used to be found around Conwy in large numbers but have virtually disappeared in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Oyster beds were a common sight in the Menai Strait and around Anglesey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wild-oysters.org\/conwy-bay\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild Oysters Project<\/a> website said they were a &#8220;vital food source&#8221; for coastal communities and &#8220;contributed&#8221; to the Welsh economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-62101291\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">Mumbles or &#8216;Oystermouth&#8217; fishery<\/a> was the largest in Wales supporting 400 fishers across 188 boats. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In the mid-1800s Welsh oyster boats reported landing 8,000 oysters daily, but up to 15,000 to 20,000 oysters in some areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The efforts to reintroduce the shellfish in Wales follow a pattern of declining numbers in other parts of the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A wildlife project on the East Yorkshire coast is testing <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8er8e30rn0o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">a new breeding technique<\/a> to reintroduce 500,000 native European flat oysters over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It was also mooted that oysters could <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8rdknn452go\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">return to the Thames<\/a> as part of an effort to clean London&#8217;s rivers last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Richard Evans Local Democracy Reporting Service Getty Images The Wild Oyster Project is in its final stage after&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":190599,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3843],"tags":[728,70,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-190598","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-environment","9":"tag-science","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114696495461411630","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/190598","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=190598"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/190598\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/190599"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=190598"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=190598"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=190598"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
