With Top Gun: Maverick <\/strong>soaring past the $1 billion mark worldwide and Tom Cruise seemingly wrapping up his iconic Mission: Impossible<\/strong> franchise, attention has now turned to the growing buzz around a potential third chapter in the Top Gun saga.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with ScreenRant,<\/a> director Joseph Kosinski offered a significant update on the long-rumored Top Gun 3, confirming that wings are officially up on the next installment.<\/p>\n

“Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak<\/strong>,\u201d Kosinski revealed. \u201cIt\u2019s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing \u2014 working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren\u2019s into it now, so we\u2019ll see how it comes along.<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

Kosinski hinted that the concept behind the sequel was simply too compelling to pass up. \u201cIt was about coming up with an idea that \u2014 again \u2014 felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can\u2019t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That\u2019s what\u2019s exciting to me.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Alongside Ehren Kruger, Top Gun: Maverick co-writer and Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie is also involved in the project, lending his expertise as a creative consultant.<\/p>\n

Just last month, McQuarrie confirmed that the team had finally nailed down the story for the third film, raising anticipation for what Maverick\u2019s next high-flying adventure will bring.<\/p>\n

\u00a0“It wasn\u2019t hard,<\/strong>\u201d McQuarrie said recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast<\/a>. \u201cI thought it would be, and that\u2019s a good place to go from is you walk into the room going, \u2018Come on, what are we going to do?\u2019 and Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, \u2018Mhm actually,\u2019 and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Top Gun: Maverick picks up decades after the original, with Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell still defying expectations as a Navy test pilot. When he’s called back to TOPGUN, it’s not to fly, but to train a group of the Navy’s best for a near-suicidal mission: taking out a fortified uranium enrichment facility.<\/p>\n

The assignment becomes personal when Maverick discovers one of the pilots is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick\u2019s late best friend and wingman, Goose. Rooster carries a grudge, blaming Maverick for issues with his father and setbacks in his own career.<\/p>\n

Despite resistance from command and tension among the team, Maverick challenges the pilots with brutal flight drills, proving that experience and instinct can still beat cutting-edge tech. A visit with his old rival-turned-friend Iceman, now gravely ill, helps Maverick confront his past and embrace his role as a mentor. After Iceman\u2019s death, Maverick is relieved of his duties, but not for long.
