{"id":1914,"date":"2025-04-03T05:25:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T05:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1914\/"},"modified":"2025-04-03T05:25:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T05:25:13","slug":"uk-eta-travel-permit-british-dual-nationals-flag-issues-with-application-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1914\/","title":{"rendered":"UK ETA travel permit: British dual nationals flag issues with application system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has officially expanded to European travellers.<\/p>\n<p>Starting 2 April 2025, all EU (except Irish nationals), EEA, and Swiss citizens need ETA approval to enter the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/icon-cross-10x10-grey-6.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\" alt=\"Close advertising\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The system became mandatory for travellers from the US, Canada and Australia on 8 January 2025, following its rollout last November for nationals of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.<\/p>\n<p>To obtain the visa waiver, which costs \u00a310 (\u20ac12) from today or \u00a316 (\u20ac19) from 9 April, travellers need to complete an online process &#8211; but some British citizens with dual nationality are already flagging issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How to apply for the UK\u2019s ETA visa waiver<\/p>\n<p>Travellers can either use the official mobile app, which can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/using-the-uk-eta-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>downloaded<\/strong><\/a> from the UK government website, or <a href=\"https:\/\/apply-for-an-eta.homeoffice.gov.uk\/apply\/electronic-travel-authorisation\/how-to-apply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>apply online here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To complete the application, you need the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/09\/26\/singapores-changi-airport-is-going-passport-free-in-2024-but-youll-still-need-your-passpor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>passport<\/strong><\/a> you&#8217;ll be travelling on, an email address and a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You will have to answer a set of suitability questions. You don&#8217;t need to enter your travel details.<\/p>\n<p>The government advises applying at least three working days before your trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can delete the app when you\u2019ve finished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/03\/19\/visitors-to-the-uk-will-soon-need-a-12-visa-waiver-heres-how-to-avoid-eta-scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>applying<\/strong><\/a>. Your ETA will be linked to your passport digitally, and you will not need to show anything else when you enter the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Though it seems pretty simple, the application process has left a handful of British dual nationals confused about whether they need to apply for the visa waiver or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ETA application issues for British dual nationals<\/p>\n<p>In theory, British citizens with dual nationality do not need ETA and should be able to travel to the UK on whatever passport they choose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But confusion has arisen for those who don\u2019t have a British passport because theirs is expired, lost, or they were never issued with one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If they choose to travel on their EU passport, the process of applying for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/03\/31\/eu-tourists-could-soon-have-to-apply-for-permission-to-travel-before-entering-the-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ETA<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; and whether it is necessary &#8211; remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>The ETA application form asks travellers to declare any other nationalities, but the drop-down menu does not give the option to select \u2018British citizen\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Should British dual nationals continue with their application without declaring their \u2018secondary\u2019 nationality, they would theoretically be forced to give misinformation about their dual nationality.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Euronews Travel posed the question to an ETA advisor from the Home Office on their web chat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>The advisor refused to give guidance about not declaring British nationality on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/01\/20\/uk-plans-price-hike-for-eta-travel-permit-just-days-after-launch-what-it-costs-and-how-to-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ETA<\/strong><\/a> form. They stated that if you are a dual citizen with British\/Irish citizenship, you do not need an ETA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, \u201cyou prove your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2025\/03\/14\/eus-etias-travel-authorisation-delayed-until-2026-heres-when-youll-have-to-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>permission to travel<\/strong><\/a> using your valid British\/Irish passport or other passport containing a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what to do if the traveller is not in possession of any of these documents, the advisor responded, \u201cYou either need to apply for a British passport or a certificate of entitlement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Renewing a UK passport from overseas costs \u00a3101 (\u20ac123), while a certificate of entitlement comes with a \u00a3550 (\u20ac658) fee.
