Previous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of such multi-ingredient pre-workout formulations (PREW) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a64917107\/bodyweight-amrap-20-minutes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a64917107\/bodyweight-amrap-20-minutes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">strength<\/a>, power output, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a61934934\/what-is-muscular-endurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a61934934\/what-is-muscular-endurance\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscular endurance\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">muscular endurance<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a45000603\/best-foods-to-gain-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a45000603\/best-foods-to-gain-weight\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle mass\" data-node-id=\"1.7\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">muscle mass<\/a>. However, a new double-blind, randomised control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15502783.2025.2519515?src=exp-la#d1e1407\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15502783.2025.2519515?src=exp-la#d1e1407\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"trial\" data-node-id=\"1.9\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trial<\/a> published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition has suggested they may not be any more effective than a carbohydrate-only supplement.<\/p>\n<p>What Did the Study Find?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">The 43 middle-aged, physically active individuals who completed the study were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the caffeinated, protein-based pre-workout supplement group or the carbohydrate-only supplement group. Each group took 30g of their assigned supplement, mixed with 400ml of water, 15 minutes before each workout session. Measurements of fat and fat-free mass, waist and hip circumferences, muscle thickness, strength, power output, and muscle endurance performance were collected before and after a six-week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a43928225\/resistance-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a43928225\/resistance-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"resistance training\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">resistance training<\/a> programme performed three times per week. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">While the caffeinated, protein-based pre-workout group showed a significant reduction in waist circumference, no significant differences between groups were identified for isometric force, countermovement jump, medicine ball throw, and upper and lower body muscle endurance performance \u2013 all of which improved in both groups. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64793692\/over-caffeination-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64793692\/over-caffeination-effects\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Caffeine\" data-node-id=\"9.0\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Caffeine<\/a> \u2013 known for its thermogenic (increases body temperature and metabolic rate) and ergogenic (performance-enhancing) effects on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a63199974\/hyrox-ski-carry-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/a63199974\/hyrox-ski-carry-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"endurance\" data-node-id=\"9.2\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">endurance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a64924529\/powerbuilding\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a64924529\/powerbuilding\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength\" data-node-id=\"9.4\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">strength<\/a>, has become the predominant ingredient in pre-workout supplements in recent years. Yet these results suggest that some of these supplements may not prove any more beneficial for resistance training gains than carbs alone. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"10.0\">What Does This Mean for Us?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">The researchers had actually predicted that compared to a carbohydrate-only supplement, a caffeinated, protein-based PREW would likely further stimulate fat loss and lead to a more favourable body composition and better performance outcomes. Partly because previous studies conducted in middle-aged adults identified beneficial effects of caffeinated PREW containing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64968295\/ultra-processed-protein\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64968295\/ultra-processed-protein\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> and fortified with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a64905464\/amino-acid-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a64905464\/amino-acid-supplements\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"amino acids\" data-node-id=\"11.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">amino acids<\/a> in maximising resistance training outcomes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">It would make sense to think that the ingredients in a caffeinated, protein-based pre-workout supplement would facilitate more gains than carb-only, with the former typically leading to a reduced perception of effort. However, this study suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a41028078\/carbohydrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a41028078\/carbohydrates\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"carbohydrates\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">carbohydrates<\/a> \u2013 widely thought of as the \u2018king of fuel\u2019 \u2013 are just as effective. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">The global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a64341010\/amazon-spring-sale-sports-nutrition-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a64341010\/amazon-spring-sale-sports-nutrition-deals\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"sports nutrition\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">sports nutrition<\/a> industry is worth a lot of money \u2013 in 2024, Euromonitor valued it at $28 billion. So, any scientific research on specific products and ingredients is welcomed \u2013 particularly because supplements are not regulated in the way food products are. With new products popping up all the time on the supplement shelves \u2013 often accompanied by aggressive marketing about their alleged effects \u2013 it is crucial we educate ourselves about their benefits (or lack thereof).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">However, this certainly doesn&#8217;t mean all caffeinated pre-workout supplements don&#8217;t promote additional resistance training benefits. It is just one study \u2013 and a relatively small one at that. The researchers themselves highlight several limitations to the study, including the lack of a standardised diet and the fact participants already drank three to five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64943402\/coffee-sleep-brain-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64943402\/coffee-sleep-brain-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"coffees\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">coffees<\/a> or teas a day, which may have affected the results. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"15.0\">The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">Along with the limitations mentioned above, this study only looked at middle-aged adults, and the researchers flag that more studies with larger sample sizes and longer-term investigations are needed.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64927866\/beetroot-juice-performance-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64927866\/beetroot-juice-performance-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"performance supplementation\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">performance supplementation<\/a>, everyone is different, and what works for somebody else might not work for you. Also, this study doesn&#8217;t show that the supplement is ineffective, just that it&#8217;s no more effective than a carb-only pre-workout supplement.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-ftlgrv emevuu60\">However, in a largely unregulated industry and with social media feeds more saturated with information than ever, this study shows that it\u2019s always worth doing your research and checking in with experts and medical professionals before taking something new.
