{"id":191530,"date":"2025-06-17T11:22:13","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T11:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/191530\/"},"modified":"2025-06-17T11:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T11:22:13","slug":"fact-check-at-g7-trump-makes-false-claims-about-trudeau-trade-ukraine-and-immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/191530\/","title":{"rendered":"Fact check: At G7, Trump makes false claims about Trudeau, trade, Ukraine and immigration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmg7sc00j227maf3hafxx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While visiting Canada on Monday for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/16\/politics\/world-leaders-g7-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Group of 7 summit<\/a>, President Donald Trump repeated one of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/13\/politics\/fact-check-trumps-false-claims-canada\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many false claims<\/a> about Canada \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/13\/politics\/fact-check-trumps-false-claims-canada\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">again<\/a> wrongly blaming former Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for getting Russia booted out of the group formerly known as the Group of 8.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojs00053b6m5nvrs3o3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/KfeTjlkKxts?feature=shared&amp;t=296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> Monday: \u201cHe was thrown out \u2013 by Trudeau, who convinced one or two people, along with Obama. He was thrown out. And he\u2019s not a happy person about it, I can tell you that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt00063b6mnzp7p8jc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, Trudeau did not become Canada\u2019s prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/canada-trudeau-liberal-cabinet-ministers-1.3302743\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">until November 2015<\/a> \u2013 more than 19 months after Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/24\/politics\/obama-europe-trip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014 ouster<\/a> from the Group of 8, a forum made up of countries with large industrialized economies. It was Trudeau\u2019s Conservative predecessor as prime minister, Stephen Harper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/stephen-harper-says-he-ll-push-for-russia-s-expulsion-from-the-g8-1.2583034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/harper-leads-charge-to-expel-russia-from-g8-ramp-up-sanctions\/article17631725\/?login=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led<\/a> the effort to kick Russia out in the wake of Russia\u2019s 2014 annexation of Ukraine\u2019s Crimea region. Trudeau\u2019s Liberals were not even the biggest opposition party in Canada\u2019s House of Commons at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt00073b6mcglk1ofx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump made the false claim while standing beside Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trudeau\u2019s successor as Liberal leader.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt00083b6m1bc3ct13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump made a similar false claim about Trudeau during an exchange with reporters at the White House in May, incorrectly <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-remarks-fifa-world-cup-2026-task-force-white-house-may-6-2025\/#119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> of Russia\u2019s removal from the Group of 8: \u201cI thought it was a very bad decision. It was headed by Trudeau, by the way, and Obama. They were the ones that really fought hard to get Russia out.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt00093b6mpc820wsu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Trade and US aid to Ukraine:<\/strong> Trump made other false claims in his Monday remarks at the G7. Speaking to reporters alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/acyn\/status\/1934723630015111632?s=46\" target=\"_blank\">erroneously described<\/a> his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/trump-us-uk-trade-announcement?cid=ios_app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade deal with the UK<\/a> as a deal with the European Union, which the UK does not belong to. Trump then twice repeated his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/26\/politics\/fact-check-trump-cabinet-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long-debunked<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/19\/politics\/fact-check-trumps-lies-about-zelensky-and-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assertion<\/a> that former President Joe Biden had given \u201c$350 billion\u201d in aid to Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt000a3b6mnvutja3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The figure is not close to correct.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt000b3b6m291ewvhv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German think tank that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifw-kiel.de\/publications\/ukraine-support-tracker-data-20758\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closely tracks<\/a> international aid to Ukraine, the US had committed about $138 billion in military, financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine from late January 2022, just prior to Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion, through April 2025. (That period includes more than three months of Trump\u2019s current presidency.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt000c3b6me6bg1uc5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s possible to arrive at different totals using different counting methodologies, but there is, regardless, no basis for Trump\u2019s \u201c$350 billion\u201d figure. The US government inspector general overseeing the response to the invasion of Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukraineoversight.gov\/Funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> on its website that the US had appropriated about $185 billion for the response through March 2025, including about $90 billion actually disbursed \u2013 and that includes money <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/how-supporting-ukraine-revitalizing-us-defense-industrial-base\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent in the US<\/a> or sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukraineoversight.gov\/Funding\/Security-Programs-Authorities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">countries other than Ukraine<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzmiojt000d3b6mjxbzvwg4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>The number of Biden-era migrants:<\/strong> While talking about undocumented immigrants at the G7 on Monday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/KfeTjlkKxts?feature=shared&amp;t=356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repeated<\/a> his frequent assertion that \u201cBiden allowed 21 million people to come into our country.\u201d That \u201c21 million\u201d figure is wrong, too.
