President Trump and Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/a> of Britain said on Monday that they had signed a deal that would cut tariffs on commerce between their countries. But there was a tiny mishap.<\/p>\n

Trump not only dropped the document but also confused the US trading partner it was with while announcing an agreement had been finalized with the United Kingdom on Monday. The president revealed the United States had signed a previously announced deal with the U.K. while standing alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the G7 Summit in Canada.<\/p>\n

But when Trump held up the folder with the document, pages tumbled to the ground, prompting Sir Keir Starmer to drop down and gather them before they blew away. Trump stood next to Starmer and watched him gather the papers.
The Republican leader then proceeded to say that the agreement was with the European Union rather than the UK.<\/p>\n

Both men laughed as the president joked it was a little windy there, though it did not appear to be wind that forced the pages from his grasp. \u201cWe just signed it, and it\u2019s done, and so we have our trade agreement with the European Union, and it\u2019s a fair deal for both,\u201d Trump then said, mixing up the U.K. with the EU.
Trump said Britain would have protection against future tariffs \u201cbecause I like them\u201d. The two leaders presented the deal, which covers aerospace and the auto sector, at the G7 venue in Kananaskis, Alberta. When reporters asked about steel, Trump said: \u201cWe\u2019re going to let you have that information in a little while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither Trump nor Starmer revealed any details on what was in the deal, but the UK PM called it a very important agreement on car tariffs and aerospace. Trump also claimed there were many other deals coming.<\/p>\n

Asked if anything had changed in the deal since they spoke about it by phone this spring, the president said, \u201cNot much.\u201d The prime minister claimed the signed document would implement it.<\/p>\n

Under details released by the Department for Business and Trade, the UK aerospace sector will face no tariffs at all from the US, while the auto industry will have 10% tariffs, down from 25%.<\/p>\n

The steel industry still faces 25% tariffs for now, although this is less than the US\u2019s global rate of 50% on steel and aluminium. The UK business department said the two leaders had pledged to \u201cmake progress towards 0% tariffs on core steel products as agreed\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just signed it, and it\u2019s done. And so we have our trade agreement with the European Union, and it\u2019s a fair deal for both, and it produces a lot of jobs, a lot of income,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we have many, many other ones coming. But you see, the level of enthusiasm is very good, but the relationship that we have is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n
