Edwin van der Sar has previously suggested Andre Onana<\/a> isn’t Manchester United’s only problem as Ruben Amorim <\/a>dropped the goalkeeper for the Premier League<\/a> fixture against Newcastle United.<\/p>\n The Reds’ No.1 shot-stopper has been omitted from the matchday squad following another lacklustre display in goal during the 2-2 draw to Lyon in the Europa League<\/a> this week. Onana, has started 69 successive Premier League<\/a> matches since arriving at the club in 2023.<\/p>\n However, he has come under scrutiny for some questionable performances. Onana allowed Lyon’s Thiago Almada\u2019s in-swinging free-kick to go all the way in, and he couldn\u2019t stop Almada\u2019s 95th-minute shot before Rayan Cherki scored on the rebound.<\/p>\n Speaking in January, Van der Sar <\/a>said Onana has a ‘fantastic’ career ahead of him, but things haven\u2019t worked out for him at Old Trafford <\/a>so far.<\/p>\n “I think that it’s quite early but Andre [Onana] has a fantastic career in front of him,” he said. “He’s gaining more experience.<\/p>\n “He has all the qualities that a goalkeeper needs so I’m sure for the next five to six years he will keep improving. He has the right attitude to be the goalkeeper for Man United for a very long time.”<\/p>\n The former Reds star also suggested signing a new goalkeeper isn’t a priority. “Manchester United<\/a> need consistent performances,” he added.<\/p>\n “This year getting back into the Champions League<\/a> is probably not going to happen – the top four is too far away with too many teams in front.<\/p>\n “With a good pre-season and one or two quality signings up front and maybe in midfield, United should be fine to challenge for those positions again. In terms of signings, nowadays they have good people on board, technical people. I’m sure they are qualified to get the right people in the door.”<\/p>\n Peter Schmeichel, <\/a>meanwhile, this week claimed ‘you never feel safe’ when discussing Onana’s errors in a rather different view to Van der Sar’s.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s a difficult one. I\u2019m not going goalkeepers\u2019 union here, but it\u2019s a difficult one because some people are running across you. But I still think he should have dealt with it,” the former United and Manchester City<\/a> goalkeeper said<\/a> on talkSPORT.<\/p>\n “The second one, again, I felt that he should have kept it. Yeah, it\u2019s a hard shot, but it\u2019s straight at him. Is he the problem? Is the defence the problem? Is the midfield? I think there are so many issues Ruben Amorim needs to sort out. I mean, I would be very uncomfortable with just pointing to one player.<\/p>\n “But it\u2019s not great to watch, I have to say that. You never feel safe. You never feel that, even going 2-1 up, that this is it.
