{"id":192609,"date":"2025-06-17T20:45:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-17T20:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/192609\/"},"modified":"2025-06-17T20:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T20:45:09","slug":"photonic-to-open-uk-quantum-rd-centre-to-aid-international-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/192609\/","title":{"rendered":"Photonic to open UK quantum R&#038;D centre to aid international expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BC quantum computing startup already has backers on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>British Columbia (BC) quantum computing startup <a href=\"https:\/\/photonic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Photonic<\/a> has announced plans to establish a new research and development (R&amp;D) facility in the United Kingdom (UK).<\/p>\n<p>Photonic, which has existing investors and partners in the UK, intends to open this across-the-pond quantum R&amp;D centre over the next three years and invest more than \u00a325 million (approximately $46 million CAD) in the initiative. The company claims this move will create more than 30 high-paying, technical jobs in the UK and advance Canada\u2019s quantum leadership both \u201cat home and abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cOur expansion into the UK is a win-win.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephanie Simmons, <\/strong><br \/><strong>Photonic<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The startup, which noted that its headquarters, core research, and foundational tech remain rooted in Canada, said its new UK centre will introduce \u201ccomplementary capabilities\u2014including targeted R&amp;D\u2014that enhance and extend [its] innovation pipeline.\u201d Photonic characterized the move as \u201ca strategic step in the company\u2019s global growth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur expansion into the UK is a win-win\u2014strengthening our ability to scale globally while reinforcing Canada\u2019s position as a leader in secure, scalable quantum technologies,\u201d Photonic founder and chief quantum officer Stephanie Simmons said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, Photonic has been working to make a fault-tolerant quantum computer a reality. The quantum computing startup is developing silicon spin qubits\u2014the fundamental unit of quantum computing, like the bit in conventional computers\u2014that it networks together. Photonic is headquartered in Coquitlam, part of Metro Vancouver, and also has a presence in the United States (US).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Simmons, who is also a co-chair of Canada\u2019s National Quantum Strategy Advisory Board and an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University, previously earned her doctorate in quantum computing from the University of Oxford, and mentioned that she admires the UK\u2019s \u201ctrailblazing approach\u201d to quantum, and the ambitions in the next phase of the Government of the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/national-quantum-strategy\/national-quantum-strategy-missions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">National Quantum Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To date, Photonic has been supported by investors and partners on both sides of the Atlantic. The 150-person startup has raised <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/quantum-startup-photonic-raises-137-million-cad-strikes-strategic-partnership-with-microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$137 million CAD<\/a> from a group that includes the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, a public-sector pension investor,\u00a0 Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Inovia Capital, UK-based Amadeus Capital Partners, the UK government\u2019s National Security Strategic Investment Fund for dual-use tech, and US tech giant and strategic partner Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/photonic-claims-breakthrough-in-quantum-computing-error-correction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Photonic claims breakthrough in quantum computing error correction<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Photonic has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/national-research-council\/news\/2024\/02\/national-research-council-of-canada-announces-funding-for-canadauk-quantum-collaborations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">benefitted from<\/a> a joint funding initiative between the National Research Council Canada and Innovate UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Evan Solomon, Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/melanie-joly-evan-solomon-to-run-newly-split-industry-and-innovation-portfolios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">new minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation<\/a>, said that Photonic\u2019s UK expansion \u201creflects our shared ambition to build a trusted transatlantic quantum future.\u201d UK Science Minister Lord Vallance echoed that assertion in a statement of his own, noting that this will deepen collaboration between the UK and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Others, including UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/uk-based-osney-capital-eyes-canadian-cybersecurity-startups-with-50-million-pound-first-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Osney Capital<\/a>, have viewed shifting international alliances amid the <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/the-us-economic-slowdown-is-hurting-canadian-tech-companies-selling-globally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">US trade war<\/a> as an opportunity to expand the work companies in Canada and the UK are doing together in areas of strategic national importance, like quantum and cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>This news adds to what has been a busy 2025 for Photonic: in February, the startup <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/photonic-claims-breakthrough-in-quantum-computing-error-correction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">claimed a breakthrough<\/a> in quantum error correction after publishing a new method it says requires fewer quantum bits than previous approaches, and in April, it was revealed to be one of three Canadian startups <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/three-canadian-quantum-startups-selected-for-us-military-backed-quantum-race-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">selected<\/a> for a US military-backed quantum race program.<\/p>\n<p>Feature image courtesy Photonic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"BC quantum computing startup already has backers on both sides of the Atlantic. &#13;
