Sheku Bayoh exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A COP lawyer has\u00a0 slammed an art gallery after claiming it showcased a \u2018biased\u2019 exhibit saying Sheku Bayoh was the victim of \u2018racist police brutality.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Kelvingrove Art Gallery in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/where\/glasgow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow<\/a> displayed a sign saying \u2018Sheku Bayoh Street\u2019 next to a painting that shows white police chasing black people &#8211; City of Empire&#8217; features a &#8216;Sheku Bayoh Street&#8217; sign<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Professor Peter Watson, lawyer and Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Strathclyde.\" height=\"540\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/professor-peter-watson-one-first-168716292.jpg\" data-caption=\"Police federation lawyer Professor Peter Watson said the exhibit was &quot;highly misleading&quot;\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/professor-peter-watson-one-first-168716292.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3<\/p>\n<p>Police federation lawyer Professor Peter Watson said the exhibit was &#8220;highly misleading&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bayoh, 31, was drunk and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drugs<\/a> and had been seen armed with a knife in Kirkcaldy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/fife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fife<\/a> in May 2015 when six officers were dispatched to the scene to restrain him.<\/p>\n<p>He died a short time later in custody and a long-running probe into the death is still ongoing to decide if race was a factor in the death.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0 lawyer for the Scottish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Police<\/a> Federation (SPF), Professor Peter Watson, complained to Kelvingrove bosses about the \u2018highly misleading\u2019 exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote: &#8220;The suggestion that Mr Bayoh\u2019s interaction with the police was primarily or solely a matter of police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violence<\/a> or that it was motivated by an attempt to control individuals of ethnic backgrounds is both misleading and unsupported by the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must formally complain that both the exhibition and its explanatory materials present a one-sided and biased account of the circumstances surrounding Mr Bayoh\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We request a detailed explanation from the gallery as to how and why this exhibition has been curated and presented in such a biased and artificial manner, and what steps will be taken to ensure that the public is provided with a balanced and factually accurate account of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">events<\/a> in question.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The row blew up earlier this week after the SPF were made aware of the controversial piece which is part of a bigger exhibit called \u2018Glasgow &#8211; City of Empire.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This exhibition examines the legacies of colonialism, slavery, and present-day issues such as racial violence and police brutality.<\/p>\n<p>It uses a \u2018Sheku Bayoh Street\u2019 sign which was put up by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/sport\/football\/team\/14914\/celtic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celtic<\/a> ultras group the Green Brigade and a \u2018Black Lives Matter\u2019 placard.<\/p>\n<p>The narrative further references brutal policing as an integral part of the maintenance of the Empire.<\/p>\n<p>I was left with a fractured skull and brain damage after \u2018random\u2019 attack on night out\u2026 then I got a chilling message<\/p>\n<p>Prof Watson addressed his letter from not just the federation, which represents rank and file officers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland<\/a>, but also specifically their members who are witnesses to the current inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote: \u201cA female police officer was seriously assaulted by Mr Bayoh during the incident, resulting in her early retirement from the force on medical grounds and ongoing receipt of therapeutic support for her mental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a>. She lost her career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inquiry is currently in crisis after the SPF said five secret meeting between the chair Lord Bracadale and Sheku\u2019s family raised questions about his \u2018impartiality.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So far, the probe has cost the public purse \u00a323.7million and counting.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said; \u201cThe museum scripted interpretation makes no mention of Sheku Bayoh or the circumstances surrounding his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the items in the Legacies of Slavery and Empire display including the sign, a placard from a Glasgow Green demonstration and newspaper headlines from the time relate directly to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/black-lives-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> Movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe street sign in the exhibition was created by activists as part of the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/topic\/protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests<\/a> and was mounted in Cochrane Street by The Green Brigade.
